If carryon bags end up being gate checked where are they picked up? Are they brought to the jetway, or do they end up with the rest of the checked luggage?

If carryon bags end up being gate checked where are they picked up? Are they brought to the jetway, or do they end up with the rest of the checked luggage?

Not necessarily. I've flown from DFW to ATL where my bags were gate checked and returned via the carousel at ATL.

Incorrect. The OP is referring to the case where the plane runs out of overhead room, and all additional carry-on that can't fit under the passenger's seat must be checked. This is the only type of "gate checking" that Airtran does (except for baby strollers and wheelchairs, which are returned to the jetway. But I assume the OP is referring to luggage).
This is not the same as "gate checking" on small RJ's, where carry-on is returned to the jetway.
To the OP: your luggage will be returned at the luggage carousel if you are forced to gate check your bags on airtran. My advice is to either pay for a priority seat up front (first several rows plus exit rows) which give you a Zone 1 boarding, or book a window seat in the back half of the plane, which should give you a low boarding Zone as well. If you get stuck with Zone 6 or 7, be near the gate so you can get on as soon as they call your zone. But please, for the sake of all fellow flyers, don't stand around near the boarding area until your Zone is called :)
