We are traveling from Atlanta on delta to madrid and taking another flight 2.5 hours later to granada on iberia. We land at T1 and must transfer to T4. Should we have enough time? I've read that the shuttle takes about 30 min from T1 to T4. Is this true? Can we check our bags all the way through even though they are 2 airlines?
Thanks for any help.

You have enough time. You can check your bags all the way to Granada. If you're on the same ticket you can do it at checkin at ATL as you also can pick up your onward BP from MAD. If you're on separate tickets you'll need your record locator and ticket number on the Madrid-granada flight to check your bags through. It may take 30 minutes or so for transfer but that's no problem, especially since your bags will be checked all the way. You'll clear customs in MAD, no problem, fast and easy, then to T4. All the signs and process are clear and easy.

Have a very good trip and welcome to FlyerTalk. :)

Welcome to Flyertalk, cclisch
There is a forum which is dedicated to European Travel, therefore, I am moving your thread to that Forum.
Good luck.

You'll clear customs in MAD

Wrong. You will clear customs in Granada (if the bags are sent there directly). In MAD you will go through immigration only.

Ok. So what does that mean for my timetable? Good or bad?

Will our bags make it safely there?

You’ll be fine, don’t worry. Jbcarioca was probably thinking “immigration” when he wrote “customs”. So it will still be “fast and easy”, as he said. ^
