How far in advance do you typically book flights? I always have tried to book as far in advance as possible (even 6 months ahead if I knew the dates I needed). I always assumed that was the lowest fare and I could get the seat of my choice, usually. If a sale ocurred after I booked and a lower fare appeared, YX would give me a credit for the difference good toward future travel, so it was all good. Lately, though, I've been burned by flights being cancelled or a change in time that is less than desireable to me. So, how far ahead is a good time frame in general to book?

Three to six months seems to be about right.

The last time I tried to obtain a credit voucher for a fare reduction (about a year ago) they told me it had to be within seven days of the original purchase. Perhaps the rules on credit vouchers have changed due to the competition giving credit at any time.

I only book eleven months in advance if it is award travel, or I see a really outstanding bargain.
