Had some plans change, so now I have a day to kill in Austin, San Antonio, or the Hill Country....am spending 2 days at the Barton Creek resort. Leaning towards Hill Country....

Have read these three threads, but I'm suffering from "Analysis Paralysis." Complicating things, I grew up in Texas, lived there for 38 years...part of my indecision is knowing I'm not liable to get back for some time and the pressure's on not to waste the Lone Star time....and it's the first time through the Hill Country without a rifle in my hand. Any of the following would be a good start:

--beer, wine
--history
--hiking and geology
--Mexican or Central Texas German/BBQ food
--a nice, scenic FM-something-to-nowhere drive
--gotta have either kolaches or breakfast tacos...either barbacoa, cabrito, or chorizo just DRIPPING with day-glo red grease.....

Thought about the SAT missions State park, it being Cinco de Mayo and all, but that puts me out of the flow for anything else, plus the I-35 drive isn't the world's most attractive.

I do have a playlist, heavy on the Willie, Waylon, REK, Roger Creager, and Jerry Jeff.

Since in childhood, etc., you've probably experienced "Austin", never unrewarding but often a "do-over", I would rent a car and drive over to Fredericksburg, stroll the Main Street, look in a few of the somewhat "kitschy" but interesting storefronts, visit the Nimitz Museum, better than expected or expectable, and come back with a short stop at Luckenbach for a cold beer. If soon, you may still catch the tail of the wildflowers, one of the best crops ever (due to the Winter cold and extra rain).

It's the "Hills of Home", with a little more flavor these days. ....But come soon, since it's due to hit 90F today.
