Religious Travelers - London-TLV ultimate itinerary challenge!!

OK, Here's a challenge for all shomer shabbat FTers...

I have double smachot over one weekend in early June, a bar mitzvah in London and a wedding in Israel on Sunday late pm. Shabbat does not end till 22:17, and looks like the only motzei shabbat flight is LY from LHR dep 22:30. The first flight out on Sunday on BA doesn't arrive TLV till 15:35, which is a bit too late to make it to the chuppah at 5pm in Jerusalem.

Can anyone have a suggestion for possible itinerary? Conditions are as following:

1. It can be from ANY London airports.
2. It can be any airlines, no-frills included.
3. Can be direct or 1 connection, SO LONG AS I can touch down Ben Gurion by 2pm Sunday.
4. I'm not picky about the inbound trip, just looking for a doable outbound idea.

TIA!

You could fly with Swiss omn Sunday:
LX 345 from LHR to ZRH at 0600
LX 254 from ZRH to TLV arr 2:30 PM

or fly Turkish Airlines on Saturday:
Flight 1984 from LHR to IST at 2230
Flight 784 from IST to TLV arr 0935

there is also one ElAl flight leaving at 2230 from LHR, that one must be kosher!

Swiss would defiantly be your earliest option (you'll make it for bruchu achrita).

Thanks for flagging the LX option, it definitely works not to mention DH is on * Alliance.

Now I've been also wondering how on earth LY can depart LHR at 22:30... As I mentioned, shabbat ends 22:17. No way shomer shabbat passengers can get on that flight. Having said that I haven't heard of haredim protesting at LHR.

In July shabbas ends at 22:31, and still no problem for the charedim, as long as the flight takes off after night fall.

I must be missing something.

If Shabbat ends at 10:17 pm (or 10:31 in July) and the flight departs at 10:30 pm, how can a Shomer Shabbat make the flight without desecrating the Shabbat?

Surely, getting to the airport, carrying luggage, checking in, going through security and boarding an airplane involve activities that are forbidden on Shabbat.

LY don't cater exclusively for the shomer shabbat market.

I fully understand that El Al has passengers who do not observe Shabbat; some are probably not even Jewish. :D

However, the OP is obviously a shomer Shabbat. How does that Saturday night flight work for him? One of the posters above wrote that: "In July shabbas ends at 22:31, and still no problem for the charedim, as long as the flight takes off after night fall."

How does an Ultra Orthodox Jew get to the airport with luggage, check in, go through security and board the flight without desecrating the Shabbat?

Again, they can't.

I think what the OP meant in terms if not a problem for the charedim is that they don't protest against LY supposedly breaking Shabbat.

You can eventually do pre-checkin. Also, there are hotels at the airport so one does not travel very far.
I also think that charedim would fly mondays ;)

I have flown to, from and through LHR, so I am fairly familiar with the airport.

Last time I was there, I stayed at the Sheraton. It took at least half an hour to get to the terminal on the Hotel Hoppa bus. The only hotels within walking distance are near T4 and T5. El Al is at T1.

Even with pre check in, one has to go through security and be at the gate ready to board at least fifteen minutes and preferably half an hour before the scheduled departure time.

The earlier poster claimed that even with a departure scheduled for a minute before Shabbat is over, Charedim have no probelm so long as the flight takes off after the Shabbat is over. How can that possibly be accomplished without hillul Shabbat?

The OP never said that the flight works for him, he wrote that the flight departs at 22:30, (meaning he can't make it), and then wrote that the earliest flight Sunday is Etc..... [/QUOTE]

The charedim aren't here to fix every chilul shabbat happening in Israel, they only insist that ELAL as the flag carrier of the Jewish state shouldn't fly aircrat on shabbat, all chilul shabbat before and after they don't intend to fight.

The way your original post was worded and the context in which it appeared left the impression that the ultra orthodox could take this flight without desecrating Shabbat.

Oy, seems like my ambiguous comment caused some comfusion. No, obviously I wasn't expecting haredim (or anyone shomer shabbat for that matter) to get on a 10:30pm flight. I was referring to them protesting "chilul shabbat flights" as I assume crews would be doing their usual pre-flight routines involving melachot while still during shabbat.

I still haven't finalised the plan yet--a bit concerned LX landing 2:30pm doesn't leave much leeway for delays as I need to make it to central Jerusalem by 5pm.

With my experiance wth Swiss, they are a reliable airline which operate on time.

You left out (most probaly on purpose) the last peace of W9London's post, which said that he hasn't seen haredim protesting Etc. on that it was that I commented that in July shabbat ends at 22:31 and the haredim have no problem.

You wrote "no problem for the charedim, as long as the flight takes off after night fall."

How is one supposed to decipher to which part of the paragraph you were replying or why the ultra orthodox would be protesting in the first place? As far as I am concerned, it may be on account that the flight does not accommodate their needs.

Haredim were only mentioned in the second paragraph (shomer shabbat and haredim are not exactly the same).

Any way, in the end of the day we understood each other, so that's the main thing ;).

Thanks again everyone. Just to let y'all know I made double smachot perfectly. Got up at 4:30am to take 6:30am Swiss flight via ZRH, touched down TLV pretty much on-time. A relative picked me up from the airport, had much-needed espresso in J'lem by 4pm. Eize yofi!

Glad to hear it worked. Just saw this thread now; the confusion is interesting.
