Hello All,

I'm new here, just signed up. I've book a holiday with my girlfriend in Aug, 2010 and I am flying with her out of Cleveland Hopkins Airport. I'm a Canadian Citizen and she is American. I know I will be crossing the border in Canada to enter the USA to go to the airport, is that the only time I will be near Customs or will I need to go through customs at Cleveland airport too? Our Flight plan is to Leave Aug 10th, 2010 from Cleveland Airport and we fly into Houston Airport which then we have a 2 hour 15 min layover, then we fly onto Calgary Airport. When we arrive into Calgary I'm guessing we will have to clear Canadian Customs? This is my 2nd flight in my life and I really don't know what to expect as I was little the last time I flew. I don't know what I can pack, what I can and cannot bring. What time we have to be at the airport as our flight leaves at 8:45am? People say to leave 3 hours ahead some same 2? She only lives 30 mins from the airport.

Any Advice?

We are flying Continental all the way to Calgary then United all the way back to Cleveland. Our Layover in Chicago on the way back is only 49 mins so under an hour.

Does Continental have snacks or a meal as we leave at 8:45am and arrive in Houston at 10:30 am and then don't leave Houston until 12:45pm to Calgary and arrive in Calgary at 4:05pm.

Any Suggestions helpful hints would be cool.

CLE-IAH is a domestic US flight. No customs involved. Once you cross the border in BUF or DTW (or so I assume) you are fine.

The one issue I see in your itinerary is the Calgary to Cleveland on UA. Find out if Calgary airport has pre-cleared US Customs. A connection of less than an hour at ORD is not enough if you have to clear US Customs there.

You will clear customs when you cross the border. Nothing at CLeveland airport.

Yes, you have to clear Canadian customs in Calgary.

This is my 2nd flight in my life and I really don't know what to expect as I was little the last time I flew. I don't know what I can pack, what I can and cannot bring.

Well, pack your necessary items. What would you like to bring that you are worried about? Some specifics would help.

What time we have to be at the airport as our flight leaves at 8:45am? People say to leave 3 hours ahead some same 2? She only lives 30 mins from the airport.

Two hours is fine for this itinerary from Cleveland airport to Houston to Calgary.

We are flying Continental all the way to Calgary then United all the way back to Cleveland. Our Layover in Chicago on the way back is only 49 mins so under an hour.

You will pre-clear US Immigration / customs at Calgary airport on your return trip.

By August 2010, Continental will probably start selling food on-board.
You have plenty of time in Houston airport. There are some pretty decent places to eat inside the terminal in Houston.

Any Suggestions helpful hints would be cool.

All my suggestions are bolded above. Good luck! Let us know how these flights go for you.

BTW, Welcome to FT!

Thanks for the Responses from you guys,

Here is some other Questions

Since we are flying Continental from Cleveland to Houston and Houston to Calgary, will we have pick up our baggage and get it reloaded or will Continental do that for us?

As for Packing for a flight, I know the normal stuff you should pack I mean like how big of a bottle of Soap and shampoo are u allowed to bring? I've heard from other sites there's restrictions on sizes of bottles? Can they be put into carry on or should they be in checked baggage? I also know no guns, knives etc.

As for Carry on Baggage? I saw by continental's website that your allowed 1 Personal bag and one Carry on Bag. Can that mean I can bring my camera bag with camera in it and a carry on?

Will the 49 mins I have coming back from Calgary to Chicago give me enough time to make my connection from Chicago to Cleveland? Some people say no some say yes?

Are there any in-flight entertainment from Cleveland to Houston and Houston to Calgary? And the Reverse on the way back with United?

Thanks

If your flights Cleveland-Houston-Calgary were booked together, Continental should book your luggage all the way to Calgary. No need for you to pick-up & recheck them in Houston.

You are limited to a single one quart-size bag of liquids/gels (shampoo, toothpaste, makeup) in your carry-on luggage. Each container in the zip-top bag can be no larger than 100 ml (3.4 oz). Larger containers can be put in your checked bags.

Your carry-on + camera bag should be fine. Assuming the camera bag is closer to the size of a laptop bag than a roll-aboard. (Note - NEVER pack a camera or valuables in checked luggage. Carry them onboard. Airlines are not liability if they are broken or stolen!)

A 45 min. connection is going to be cutting it close if you have to clear customs in Chicago. If Calgary has pre-clearance, you will probably be ok.

I'll leave your other questions to the Continental experts.

Scoow is right that if your Cleveland-houston-calgary trip is on one ticket, then Continental will check your bags through to Calgary.

Since calgary has pre-clearance for US Immigration/Customs, you will be ok for your connecting flight on United, as long as your Calgary-Chicago flight comes on time.

The in-flight entertainment for Continental will depend on the aircraft type being used.
A couple of days before departure, you can go to continental website, and look under "flight status". Search for your flight. Then, click on "amenities". That will tell you what entertainment you would have.
On mainline aircraft, it will generally be movies playing on overhead TV's;
on certain aircraft, you can even have "Direct TV" (live Satellite TV).

I dont know much about United entertainment.

Thanks for the help and Advice all.

How is the Service on Continental and United meaning Flight Attendants etc? I've been reading mixed reviews about there service in the air? Anyone have experience with them?

I received e-tickets via the company we used to fly with and have a airline reservation # can I use that # to check in 24 hours before the flight on there website?

Now I was also told that we can pay for our one checked bag not carry on via the website 24 hours before and drop it at the curb and they will take care of it? It's called a curb side drop off? Anyone done this before? Is it Safe?

I've also had to conflicting reports from the travel people we booked with that this could be a long flight but after reading my itinerary it says we are only 4 hours total? Does anyone here know the calculations? Leaving Cleveland at 8:45am arriving in Houston for 10:30am. Then we leave Houston at 12:45pm and arrive in Calgary for 4:05pm. My Question is this? How long is the actual flight from Cleveland to Houston? and How long is it from Houston to Calgary? I'm not good with math so any help would rock.

Departure and arrivals are posted for time local to that city. Your flights cross two time zones, so you gain an hour between Cleveland and Houston, and another hour from Houston to Calgary. Add two hours to your flight times to get actual flying time.

As far as service levels for cabin crews for the airlines that you will be flying, I think it's fair to say that there is no way to predict how the particular crew members will perform on your flights. I think it's safe to say that most crew members perform in a professional manner and, like any other human beings, they have their up days and down days.
