I arrived at OKC yesterday to pick up my car and was told that Thrifty now charges 2 dollars a day for USAirways miles partnering.....Hell, I only signed up to get the triple miles deal...now I have to pay for it? What kind of incentive is that? I have to change my Thrifty profile because the next agent may not warn me about it

I am wondering what Thrifty is doing with air miles as well. I noticed it specifically states on the American Airlines site they are no longer awarding air miles.

I think all the car companies that give you the option of having miles posted to your airline program instead of to their own points program will charge you a fee. Some of them only charge it per rental, but others charge it per day. That's been going on for some time now, nothing new.
It's not just car rentals, whenever you choose to earn miles or points in a program different from the one offered by the company with whom you're transacting that company must purchase those miles/points from the other company and pay a 7.5% tax per the 1997 Taxpayer Relief Act. The company then passes the tax along to you in the form of a fee or surcharge. If you choose to earn the miles/points in the company's own program there is no transaction to be taxed and thus no fee. The website below sums it up pretty well.

To be fair, it is shown in multiple places:
*On the Thrifty website in the terms & conditions of the triple mileage promo
*On the Thrifty website in the terms & conditions of your rental reservation
*On your rental contract when you review the charges and sign

Elola's well-put summary explains the reason nicely.
