Just wanted to let you know that the competition was a total scam, but what was more infuriating is that Lufthansa treated a frequent flyer member like crap - mocked me via email answers, never confirmed or answered my faxes, and almost ignored me on the phone. All I wanted was them to fix the link to my nomination.. or at least listen to me.
Besides the whole competition fraud, I really believe that their mileage program is the weakest of all the ones I have (Airfrance, El Al, etc) and I get poor treatment when I try to order tickets on the phone, unlike Airfrance/KLM that talk to me like I'm some prince.

First of all: Welcome to FT!
Glad to hear AF/KLM treat you like a prince! Maybe you could explain your problem with the competition in more detail, so we all can better understand the problems you had with it?
If you want to get into a discussion whether M&M is the worst/best FFP around, there is a ton of threads on that topic, just use the search function.
And please let the folks in the AF/KLM forum know, that you are being treated as a prince, because I'm sure they would like to hear how you made that happened.

Well, to defend the OP a little bit, the 'name the 380' really seems to be a scam. They have already been named, so how can anyone win competition to name them? To make it even worse, every single name I tried to propose was refused, saying 'this name was already submitted by someone else' (I do not recall exact wording), so I could not even enter that competition. So, again, yes the competition was scam. As for the rest of the OP, I second all the other respondents...

Well, just two are naimed.
D-AIMA = Frankfurt am Main
D-AIMB = München
D-AIMC = YOU NAME IT :o
I also believe it is a scam. Picking one name out of the TOP 50 is just "slightly" a competition of the most popular name. Basically, LH will have to find the one name out of 50 that is not making fun of the bird being late, not offending the Wolf and being understand in the parts of the world where LH flies to.
And who knows whether they really award somebody 1,000,000 miles. Unless I see it, I doubt it, like everything that LH does. Really sad it is that far.
Other than that, I'd wish the OP would have taken a different approach to enter FT.
Anyway, still welcome and reconsider ;)

No you guys missed the point they are looking for a generic name like the 747 got called the Jumbo back then and the name stuck. Even today if someone says to you "I flew in a Jumbo...." then most people will know it is the plane with the "hump" on top and for those in the know it is a 747. It is that kind of "name" they are looking for - not ones for the indiviual planes those are traditionally named after german cities by Lufthansa.

It's a competition, not a scam. Just a bit of fun, not as if they asked for your bank details (e.g. because they needed to transfer 3 million from Nigerian grandma and can you help!!!).

It still does not explain the fact, that I tried to suggest several names and all of them were refused, because apparently someone else already submitted it. The possible name pool is of course limited and basically only the lucky few first could submit and the rest cannots. SO IT IS A SCAM!!!

I don't understand how only accepting a certain name from the FIRST person to propose it is any kind of "scam"..
The competition has been advertised as having ONE prize... so if LH accepts multiple repeats of the same suggestion from numerous people, they will STILL have to decide which of the proposers wins... and - logically - would go for the "date/time" submitted IMO... which has exactly the same effect as only allowing each name to be submitted once... AND avoids all the "I suggested THAT" screaming from numbers 2-whatever.....

....the competition was not about naming idividual planes. They will be named by german cities and states. It was more about giving nickname to the plane, like Jumbo jet for 747 or Bobby for 737, also jumbolino for Avro jet.

How do you come to this conclusion? I have to admit that your explanation doesn't convince me at all. Why would LH "invent" a general name for the A380? Let's assume they pic "Atlantis Luft" and this very odd name shall be used as a general term for the A380 how would a regular SQ or EK fly know what I am talking about when I mention that I have flown on the "Atlantis Luft"? This doesn't sound plausible to me and btw totally neglects the general linguistic development of nickname, though I have to admit that I am not an expert in linguistics. Anyway this approach would be even more strange than the general LH A380 hype apart from the introduction of new F.

It does not have to convince you, it's what LH stated. They clearly stated at the beginning of the competition that they were looking for an overall name like Jumbo for the 747. Not individual names for new planes.
Every free competition is a scam for the sole purpose of collecting valid emails and other information. So what's the fuss about here?

And exactly what is unimaginative to continue a tradition that at least has been in place for the last 20 - 30 years - naming LH planes after the federal states and the cities of Germany.
As FRA and MUC are the main hubs of LH and the places where their A 380 are going to be based - I think it fits quite well - but then again I am oldfashioned and boring.

Well, the nice little airline that called their planes eg "Schneeflocke" got absorbed by AirBerlin. And the same AirBerlin named 20 of their planes after cities in the Ruhr area now. We Germans must generally be sooo boring. However, still better than naming your planed after WWII and other heroes.

There is a general tendency to go the boring route nowadays. Back in the day BA planes had various, unique designs on their tail that looked great IMO. Today though the logo and the planes look bland in general.
Same with the currency, I have never encountered uglier-looking money than the Euro, even though I consider it to be the world's #1 currency (yeah, I know, the Greeks are sabotaging the credibility of the Euro from the inside so it's been taking a major pounding recently). The banknotes are just terrible...
Then look at the reverse of the coins, how many countries have put their famous people on some of the coins and how many have gone the boring route? I mean come on, pick and choose, get Einstein, Newton (well, this one will have to wait a bit), Mozart or Copernicus on there (this one will have to wait a while too).
So why should we be surprised when an airline names its planes after it's... cities (yaaawn.. boring, I know)? The only thing that is surprising is that they announce a competition like they're about to pick something new, unique, unexpected... only for most people to to still expect the most expected of choices.

..However, still better than naming your planed after WWII...
You sat in a plane named "World War II" ? That rocks.
If you pick the right cities, you could merge both paradigms: "Port Moresby", "Hiroshima", "Kursk", "Stalingrad", "Dresden" .... but ever so many people would not enjoy the history lesson.
Singapore Airlines named their 747 fleet the "Megatop" and each of their planes have that on the side...
That is because Singaporeans - immersed into the innocence of Singlish - never get any porn jokes.
..Same with the currency, I have never encountered uglier-looking money than the Euro, even though I consider it to be the world's #1 currency...
There's a system to this . "They" want you to give it away as quickly as possible.

Azul, the Brazilian start-up carrier launched by JetBlue founder Dave Neeleman, sortof did that with their contest for naming their airline. They picked a winner from the submissions and gave them the free flights for life pass but didn't use the name they submitted.

This thread reminds of a KLM-contest a few years ago (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/klm-flying-dutchman/359438-win-world.html). The task was to write a slogan with 15 words or less. The winning slogan had a whopping 65 words :D

lufthansa.com's front page has a picture of the nose of an A380 inviting us to:
Fly with me!
Experience greatness and fly
on the LH A380 to Tokyo,
Beijing or Johannesburg.
Be part of it!
I wonder why it doesn't say "Fly with Lady Bee!":p

LH has formed a working group with an IT consulting company and once the project plan has been approved by the budget committee of the supervisory board work on this change can start. Just give it another 6 months and EUR 6MM to complete this complex project.

So the winner is Denisa Tudorica.
"Her suggestion impressed our jury...
I strongly wonder what she suggested besides the actual juvenile naming effort? Her personal acquired skills and a jury consisting of old bored males ... I guess this is one more of this "chosen by objective criteria and hard facts" fairytale which doesn't belong on FT  ...

Is she a personal acquaintance of yours?

My friend gave that name to his microlight. Sounds like a mosquito that I would like to swat out of the air or spray with insect repellant.

Not yet.
If I was a member of the jury, I could soon brag that 'yes' :o ...

I thought their mascot was a crane named "Lu".
So what's the idea of naming it after a BEE?
Sounds idiotic.
