This is a question from new member SunapeeLady:
(could one of you please offer her some assistance and PM or better yet email her with answer via her profile? Thanks.)
"I travel in a few days to Madrid and then must connect between Terminal 4 (not 4s) to Terminal 1 to catch an Easy Jet flight. I know I must take a bus but where do I catch the bus, and then get off? What process will I face as I will be travelling to a non schengen counrty?...immigration, passport control and security? I have less than two hours so I don't want to make a wrong turn. Can you advise me or direct me?"

Since there is no link to the profile, and for the benefit of everyone, I'll answer right here (cos the boss asked nicely ;)):
Entering the Schengen area, you will clear immigration at T4. As Easyjet do not interline bags, you will have to pick them up and clear customs as well. At the end of this process, you will step into T4 arrivals hall.
The free shuttle bus leaves from outside the arrivals level in T4. The third stop is T1 departures ("salidas" - the other useful word here is "llegadas" which means "arrivals"). There is a map on the airport website (http://www.aena.es/csee/Satellite?pagename=PopupImagenes&cid=1138956583069&Language=ES_ES).
At T1, you will have to check in for your EasyJet flight, check in any bags you may have, and proceed to security into the departure lounge.
Have a good trip!

As the person who asked the question seems anxious, I'd add that, because the distance between T4 and T1-2-3 is quite far, one should not become concerned that the transfer bus seems to leave the airport and join the motorway (freeway).
Others may wish to know that the metro provides an alternative to the bus. It's not free, though, and if you're using T1 there's quite a long walk from the T1-2-3 metro station to the check in counters/security in T1.
Low cost airlines in Europe tend to restrict lugagge allowances, so check in advance the allowed size and weight of your luggage. Excess weight is usually expensive and you have to pay for it at a different counter after check in.
