i am lucky enough to be able to visit the masters this year, short notice.
i am looking for advice where i can still expect to find accomodation for two nights in the area (have a rental car), no high expectations, i just need a clean room...
thanks in advance, your help is appreciated.

There will not be anything available in Augusta. Your best bet would be in the Columbia, SC area. Columbia is about a 1 hour drive, but all interstate along I-20. Athens, GA is also a posiblity and is about 1.5 + hours away. Southeastern Atlanta suburbs (along I-20) would strech your dirve to 2 hours. Augusta is not a huge city and rooms are usually booked up years in advance.

Kayak does have some stuff listed. Not cheap, but ... last minute.
Columbia does show a good bit of stuff having room.

I'd simply boondock at the nearest Walmart that permitted overnite stays.
Sam's Diet Cola + cheap handy wipes...priceless.

Just scored tickets to the Wednesday practice round. From what I see here, best bet is to drive from Atlanta to Athens and get a hotel room in Athens for the night. Any recommendations? Couple of Hampton Inns and Hilton Garden but I have no idea which one is most convenient for what I'm planning.
Appreciate any insight. Many thanks.

Athens is a 2hour drive from AGS. If it's an overnight thing, yeah, that'll work, but commuting it every day would be a dog. CAE is closer.

If you are flying in/out of ATL and just driving to Augusta for one day, I would look for something along I-20 rather than in Athens. Athens is too far north to be "on the way". It's the same distance to Augusta if you are staying for several days, but for just one day I wouldn't add to the ATL-hotel drive. There are a couple of hotels in Conyers (2 hours from Augusta), but I would look for something further east if possible. Sorry I don't know the area that far east well enough to make any recommendations.

I concur with everyone who recommended Columbia. I've done the Masters a couple of times and this has worked out well for me. The drive is generally very easy and the room rates are acceptable.

Actually there are quite a lot of motels available in Augusta starting at $100 per night at the Scottish INN for Friday and Sat. 8th-10th. Found pricing on skyscanner.com, sort lowest thru highest. Most motels are in the $150- $250 range.
