Arriving NRT 3pm and leaving 10:55am next day... thinking of using points to stay at Park Hyatt. Any recommendations on what to do? Would love to see a park and/or temple if possible.

We are arriving on AA and departing on JAL in J but with OW emerald should get access to first lounge which would like to try... how is security at NRT with status/J ticket?

I wouldn't bother with the Park Hyatt if I were you. You might get there around 5.30pm and you'd need to leave at 6.00am or earlier the next day. >3 hours round trip for not much.

If your ambition is to see a temple and a park, then I suggest overnighting in Narita City. Jump in a cab and go to a ryokan (http://www.wakamatsuhonten.jp/map.html) in the town. Head straight to the Narita san temple before it closes. Then go back to your inn for a Japanese dinner and a night on futon. If sleeping on the floor doesn't appeal, there are some Western style hotels too.

With these hours, jlb calls it correctly. Stay in Narita City unless this is likely to be the only time in your life you will be in Japan.

I agree. If you've never been to Japan before, Narita provides a "bite-size" sample of it.

It's only 15 minutes by train from the airport to the town, as opposed to a minimum of 70 minutes to Tokyo.

That's a bit extreme! The 8.02 N'EX from Shinjuku gets to Narita Airport Terminal 2 at 9.26 which ought to be plenty of time for a 10.55 departure in J.

Yes, but the area around the Park Hyatt isn't that interesting, and the OP will be arriving too late and leaving to early to see much other than a lot of other skyscrapers.

Narita City, on the other hand, looks like Japan and has a pleasant temple with wooded grounds to stroll around in. When I was there, the grounds opened at 8AM.

Personally, if I had just gotten off a plane the previous night and was scheduled to board another one in a couple of hours, I'd rather be taking a walk among trees and ponds than sitting on the N'EX at 8AM. I don't care how many hotel points I had.

Note that what I say is true only if the OP stays in the town of Narita, not in the area right around the airport, which looks like--the area around an airport, complete with multi-lane highways and hotels standing like islands alongside them.

You are correct, sir. Somehow I had "ten" in mind rather than 10.55.
I prefer to arrive two hours before scheduled takeoff, so the 8.02 train would be cutting things a little finer than I prefer, but 6.00 is earlier than necessary. In any case, though, the OP will be leaving for the airport well before any of Tokyo's urban attractions are open. It won't be meaningful to spend those early morning hours in Tokyo rather than Narita.

I would definitely recommend Tokyo over Narita if the OP wanted to go clubbing, shopping, gawking at bright lights etc. in the evening and I would definitely recommend Tokyo if the OP had more "awake time" between flights ... but since the OP just wants to see a park and a temple, then Narita is fit for purpose IMHO.
