...
"Also, Bank of Japan Gov. Masaaki Shirakawa said Friday the central bank aims to stimulate demand by maintaining a low interest-rate environment,"
How low can the interest get?

Personally its OK for me as a foreigner there's tax refund (when you spend 10K Yen plus, which is not that difficult). Though sometime the points reward is more attractive.

That's why when we as foreginer do shopping there's tax refund (when you spend 10K Yen plus, which is not that difficult). Though sometime the points reward is more attractive.

And not every store has tax refund

Nikkei - Mar. 12
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said Friday the government needs to take steps against the yen's recent strength, which doesn't reflect Japan's weak economic and industrial conditions.

Because of overseas factors, "there has emerged a strong yen that we can hardly believe reflects the fact that Japan's economy and industries aren't necessarily strong," Hatoyama said in a parliamentary session.

Maybe he was the one who wrote that line about ""the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage"

Or this, maybe? I offer an expired Chin's discount cert for a translation.

The Tokyo High Court on Thursday dismissed a suit claiming that imbalances in the weight of ballots in last year's Lower House election were unconstitutional.

Acknowledging the maximum difference of 2.3 times was "unfavorable from the standpoint of the Constitution," Presiding Judge Tatsuki Inada declared the election constitutional.

While high courts nationwide have ruled on similar lawsuits, this was the first court to find the ballot weight difference in the Aug. 30, 2009, election constitutional.

The Osaka and Hiroshima high courts have ruled that ballot imbalances were unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, a separate Tokyo High Court bench and the Fukuoka High Court Naha branch said the discrepancy created an "unconstitutional situation."

None of the four rulings deemed the election invalid.

As one who lives in the U.S. but often works for Japanese clients who state their pay rates in yen, I LIKE the strong yen and hate it when the yen goes too low.

Seems like PM's statement doesn't make much difference. USD to Yen is down (ie. yen is up) today :(

Stronger yen will just keep hurting Japan's export business...it this strong yen keep going on, there might not be so many clients left for you to work with :p

Do I hear the sound of a EconoToto flushing?

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- The yen is likely to weaken to 100 per dollar, a level last seen in April, as the Bank of Japan pumps money into the financial system to combat deflation, according to Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank.

Yodobashi Akiba here I come! I'm totally bringing back a space-age toilet if it weakens further than 100-1.

100 to the dollar is reasonable, but those times when it has gone down to 135 to the dollar have wreaked havoc on my income. Let's all think "100, 100."

Comments from the PM don't seem to have much effect on the exchange rate...unlike last time when the new financial minister talked about it. Last time he the financial minister suggested 1 USD to 95 yen...so I don't think you have to worry about the yen dropping below 100 yen in the near future. 1 to 100 is good for quick currency conversion :p

Personally, I think 50 JPY/USD is a more appropriate exchange rate. Maybe even stronger.
