I've never into a Formula 1 live and Singapore is one of the cheapest venue (aside from Malaysia) in the calendar. Any advice on cheap hotels nearby?

For F1, even cheap hotels magically transform into expensive ones. Only the bottom of the barrel (Hotel 81, Fragrance, etc) will keep their regular rates, and you'll want to book them in advance as well.

Any other general tips for being in Singapore during the GP? Things to do/see aside from the normal recommendations? Places to avoid? Specific events?

Personally I would avoid going anywhere near the race track due to the traffic jam and crowds. :D

Apart from the usual touristy places I can't think of that many that aren't already at the track.

Any suggestions on a good place to go to after the race for a week to 10 days of relaxation?

Our 10th Wedding anniversary is October 6th. And we've been struggling with where to go.

Mrs BDB is reluctant to try Thailand based on the fact that it's very humid and could rain.

We honeymooned in Bora Bora, but it's next to impossible to get to from Singapore. It would seem to be faster to go back to LAX and fly to BOB from there!.

I like to eat and drink, lavishly. Would probably like to hit some of the nightlife too.

Staying at the St. Regis, but hoping to hit a couple of the older hotels for a drink. Cliche, yes, but I have not done this on previous trips and don't get to Singapore often.

Also really hoping to take in all the race-related pageantry. I have never been to any F1 races. Is there anything specific I should make sure I see?

I'm sure traffic will be atrocious. Luckily, it seems like we can walk to many spots and in the worst case, take the MTR (or MRT, I forget). What normal touristy places would you suggest?

You could do a full day at Sentosa or spend the morning there. Then go for a Singapore river tour, do the duck or hippo tours (http://www.ducktours.com.sg/), visit the botanical gardens, or Zoo. At night you can either go to the night safari or skip that and head straight to Mohamed Sultan or Clarke Quay for the drinking spots there. Or if you prefer something abit more mature shoot me a PM and I will point you to the right spots. ;)

You mean a week in Singapore or Asia in general?

Traffic, even on race day, is not bad at all. We drove right up to the edge of the circuit and parked at the Raffles Place carpark. It's the phenomenon of everybody being worried about the traffic and thus using public transit. Just take a taxi.

GPs are huge international events and bring fans from everywhere. Just explore the inside of the circult (which will be closed to traffic so you can walk everywhere). You'll see dancers and food and drinks and general revelry. At night, hit the clubs. The best F1 partiers are the Brazilians, followed by the Australians and the Spanish. The girls just show up from all over the world to party!

Ever try "couch surfing"... might be a better/cheaper option.

I went to the 2009 F1 in Singapore -- my first F1 race ever.

A -really- nice event. Did not know what expect, but flew in for a few days. I bought tickets off of craigslist/Ebay Singapore -- I mainly ended up calling the phone #'s listed to make sure they were still available.

I got seats in different stands for each day. Even scored a skybox ticket on the second day for a reasonable amount. It was nice to see things from different places, and the circuit is quite large, so lots of walking, but in a good way as you can stop and see the track from lots of places.

They had nightly entertainment in the various zones around the track -- live music, performances, Backstreet Boys, etc.

The end result was very nice. Yes, it would be easier to watch the race on TV because when you are there you can only see a small sliver of the track and watch the rest on the large monitors. But to hear the cars & feel the power as they go by is worthwhile IMO.

Pennisula Excelsior (sp?) was right in the heart of things and I picked up a decent room rate + promotional tickets.
