TalkBoard Topics - Motion Passed: Change Name of WestJet forum to WestJet Frequent Guest

On behalf of TalkBoard Vice President lucky9876coins, whom I believe is currently in the air on a CX F flight, I'm pleased to update the community on a vote that's just been posted in the TalkBoard's forum --

Moved by bhatnasx and seconded by skywalkerLAX that the TalkBoard recommend changing the name of the WestJet Passenger Perks forum to WestJet Frequent Guest forum.


This vote will close Mar 22, 10 at 7:02 am or after all TalkBoard members have registered their vote, whichever comes first.

I agree. But Westjet didn't want to name their program Passenger Perks because of some perceived influence by Air Canada, seeing how they are top of the list in the programs forums LOL.

Passenger Perks sounds much cooler.I'm not on TalkBoard, but I spent several years organizing Web sites professionally (and still do, a bit). Some of that involves lists of things that belong to other companies. I don't always like the names they pick. That doesn't mean I can change them on my own.

The purpose of using a name here is, after all, identification.

What name any one of us, or even all of us together, might like is irrelevant.

The only thing that matters is what WestJet decides to name their program. They've made that call.

To my mind, that settles it. This vote should just be a formality.

I agree with Efrem. Why is this even being voted on? Some random person on here randomly named the WestJet forum "Passenger Perks" even though it is in no way associated with the airline. So clearly I am favour of changing the name.

Research actually shows that the airline itself named their program this:

As for "Guest", well, Amtrak calls their program that and they aren't a hotel. You're right, Passenger Perks is much cooler but FlyerTalk thought of that name to separate the conversation between WestJet and Air Canada and we may have a common use trademark by this time!

Yes, they are voting to change the name of the WS forum.

Not sure if you followed the Air Canada forum much a few years ago, so a quick history on it. The AC/Aeroplan forum became kind of the unofficial forum for all things Canadian to be talked about. Many of the regulars objected to all this talk of WestJet and other Canadian airlines on that forum. WestJet was also rumoured to be about ready to launch a FF program. So Randy added the WestJet forum, and gave it the temporary name of Passenger Perks, until such time as WestJet came out with a program and a name. It took them a little longer than planned, but it is now out.

Passenger Perks was only a Flyertalk name, nothing to do with WestJet, so I don't really see the need to reference it anymore as any kind of former name for the forum.

Since the program now has a name "Frequent Guest Program", in my opinion the forum about that program should use the name Westjet gave it - anything else would be confusing going forward. I also expect that is what the Canadians (and others) looking for information would use as a search term.

Not sure there is much of an issue. It just seems this board runs on a lot of formalities, so I figured posting here about getting the name changed was one way to go. I'm not sure, but I imagine if WestJet had a higher profile, and the forum was busier, it could have simply caught the eye of Randy, and he could have changed it unilaterally.

Hypothetically speaking, I wonder what happens if the Talkboard doesn't vote to change the name of a program forum to that program's name? I mean, I can't see that happening, being as this isn't kindergarten here, but I wonder if Randy would simply say "The program is named X, and we name our forums after the programs, so X it is".

This is a fairly straightforward change, and really the process of the vote is for formality so that nobody can just arbitrarily change the name of the forum whenever they want.
