I will be visiting the Madison's home-- Montpelier-- and coming from Charlottesville, VA area. Any suggestions of the best place to look for a motel? From there I am heading down to Williamsburg, VA. I don't have to stay in Charlottesville the night before if there is a better/closer location with motel choices.

I go to the Fall Fiber Festival in Montpelier most years and, frankly, there's not much around there. There are a few motels in Orange, but Charlottesville is the closest place with a reasonable selection and is not a bad drive.
