Some FT'ers patiently provided me with some suggestions for scoffing in Singapore and having just completed my second of two four-day visits over the last few weeks I wanted to repay the trouble by highlighting a particular place I found that I fell in love with.
This recommendation is useful for anyone staying near Bugis (the Intercontinental) for example.
Maggies is at 1 Liang Seah Place just off North Bridge Road at the junction of Middle Road. Maggies is really special because of Maggie and her family who run and staff the place. She is passionate about her small eatery.
We were the only non-locals there on our several visits and she and her family seemed so pleased that outsdiers ventured in that we were extended almost a family welcome. Standard Chinese and Thai food are wonderful and although three dish sizes are offered (small, medium and large!) we weren't allowed to either order large or medium as small was felt to be large enough and when they thought we'd ordered too much they carefully deselected some for us! This degree of interference to some might seem a bit controlling but they really were simply being hsopitable helpful and honest. Adjustments were made to my rather zealous love of chilli, and when they were eating things and I enquired some of their food was placed on the table for us.
The food is cooked almost home style with excellent ingredients and is pretty cheap. A tip was firmly returned to us as "no tipping neccessary". We went there on our first visit and returned a couple of weeks later and on that visit we were recognised instantly a table was cleared and on that visit and our third and fourth visits the welcome was so warm and mum was designated our hosts and mothered us through our choices.
I told Maggie I'd like to tell my friends about her place - but she has very little knowledge of the internet and will never see this. So, please say hello to Maggie from her friends in the Uk if you visit - we miss her - this will get you a special welcome and I think you'll fall in love with the people as much as you will the food they place in front of you.
Hope the pointer delights anyone who takes it up.
