Cheapest is $3.

Two hours + wait time. Two city buses.

RideMETRO.org is your friend. They may try to put you on that ripoff $15 "Express" bus part of the way.
Good luck & welcome to FlyerTalk!

Cheapest is normally going to be $2.50

The 88 bus runs from the Hobby Metro bus-stop area; it goes toward downtown where you get off near, but not in, the Transit center. There (same bus stop) you catch the 102 to IAH and pay another 1.25 (for the 2.50 total) The 102 bus goes all over greenspoint and various areas and takes forever but this is the cheapest. On a good day you are looking at a minimum of 2 hours. I'd plan for at least 2:30.

I have taken the Metro Airport Express bus to Bush IAH several times and don't find it a rip off at all. It is quick, frequent, comfortable (larger "tour" type bus, not city style), and not crowded. If you are flying, or flew, Continental at IAH you get a discount and it only costs 10$ one-way instead of 15$

In fact I did the Bush Airport Express to 88 bus last Wednesday and made it from jetway at IAH term B to driving my car out at Hobby (long story had to change flights and airports last minute) in 1 hour 35 minutes and this was during the start of rush hour. My time is worth the extra 10 bucks. I understand when saving money is the goal however.

So you can pay 11.25$ total to transfer with the Airport Express option, and as noted above $2.50 would be the cheapest by taking the city busses (88 and 102).
If you can manage to get a Metro Q card beforehand, then IIRC, you are allowed free transfers, which would make the cost 1.25$ total which is very cheap.

The private blue shuttle services charge 45$ and the departure times are not set in stone.
I was told last week the wait was 40-50 minutes, and that is before the van gets there to load.

I have no idea what a cab would cost but I'd guess at least 75$ (unless there is a zone rate for those?) A one way car rental would be cheaper normally!
The cab would normally be the quickest option ~ budget an hour. If ever taking a cab, go to the chron.com website on your cell and check the transtar maps to make sure the freeways are clear.

Ciao,
FH

Me either.

I've become a big fan of the Metro Airport Direct to and from IAH. It runs on schedule every 30 minutes. It takes 30 minutes each way, even at rush hour. The bus is usually near empty. They ask at IAH if you need a cab from the Passenger Plaza to somewhere else and, if you do, one will be waiting for you when the bus arrives. At $15 each way, it's not a bad deal. At $10 each way with the current promotion for those who are holding a CO boarding pass, it's a veritable bargain.
