Marriott Rewards (including Ritz-Carlton) - Dissatisfaction at Residence Inn Property: Points or One Night's Rate?

Hi All,

I just checked out of a Residence Inn property. I am a loyal Marriott customer but by no means an expert on MR. Long story short, I had several complaints on my stay (will share details later on when I'm not rushing to the airport), and the front desk staff offered me 15,000 points. Then, I returned from lunch an hour later and was told she talked to the manager who offered 50% off the room rate for one night. I instantly said that the value of 15,000 points is greater - so she offered one night free. My rate was $87.20 + taxes, coming to about $100 per night total. I settled. Did I make a good decision on taking the $100 refund? Or, would the 15,000 points have been better? Nonetheless, I plan to write to the front office manager about my experience.

Thank you in advance for your replies!

This is definitely a YMMV issue, but I redeem MR points at around 1Eurocent each, making 15,000 points worth $200+. I think most would concur that they can easily get 1 UScent of value per point so that's $150.

If you're lazy about it the value can be truly rotten, well less than $50 for your 15,000 points.

So I think you've been diddled, but not by that much...
