TalkBoard Topics - What's going on with voting/notification periods?

Getting a little bemused by this.
The rules of TB state that
Regular motions shall be kept open for a period of two weeks from the posting of the sticky poll unless
a. under extenuating circumstances, the President may call for a shorter voting period although in no circumstance shall a vote be open for less than five days.
b. all TalkBoard members have registered their vote.
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/town-hall-official-talkboard-voting-decisions/885069-motion-passed-new-talkboard-guidelines.html
Of the votes which have come up recently:
Latinpass - announced on public TB 17th of Feb, vote to close Mar 1 - 12 days
Accor - announced on public TB 24th of Jan, vote to close Feb 10 - 17 days
Support for Haitian relief - no public announcement of the vote
Are we ignoring the rules, making them up as we go along or what?! :D Some of us spent much blood, sweat and tears getting agreement to the TB rules.
Jenbel we do our very best to follow our rules and actually I think we've followed them all here.
In fact, as TalkBoard President I'm the one that opens and manages these votes, and I'm pretty sure that every vote I have ever opened has been set for 14 days.
What happens is that a member motions, there's a second, and I post a vote. Somewhere after the second step, either just before or just after the third, the TalkBoard Vice President is going to let the community know where things stand. Usually right after I post the vote, but I can imagine a flight delay or long-haul segments or extenuating circumstance that causes it to make sense to post right before I've gotten a chance to formally put the vote up. Or it might take a day from when the vote has gone up before the community knows about it.
We all travel, I know that I'm almost always online when on the road but occasionally there are little hiccups along the way.
Now, I can tell you that all 3 votes you mentioned were opened for 14 days. Bear in mind that a vote will close when all TalkBoard members have cast their ballot. So when a vote closes in less than 14 days that's usually the reason.
The Haitian relief vote is a great example. We posted that vote, I approached members directly asking them to vote, and despite being far-flung across the globe members of TalkBoard all voted VERY quickly. So we let everyone know quite quickly as well. I think that vote was done within a day. And that's a testament to the Board members, they cast their ballot in favor of something that was pretty obvious without delay.
Hope that helps.
Best,
Gary

Gary, thanks for the explanation. But it seems you aren't quite getting my point.
According to the public notification we received, the voting period for the Accor vote was 17 days - you say the voting period you set in the poll was 14 days. So I'm presuming there was a typo in the public thread in the date that the poll was due to close, meaning that we were misinformed... or lucky is presicent and knew 3 days before the vote was posted that it was going to be posted? :D
I can understand that lucky may have been travelling when the most recent poll for Latinpass was posted, so it may have taken him a couple of days to get into the TB forums to post it. That's the life of us on FT.
When he voted in the Haiti poll however, since you haven't mentioned any requirement to keep it confidential, shouldn't that have been notified publicly to us before he voted?
Jenbel, my point is per our guidelines we promptly notify the community of our actions and I think we're doing that.

Sounds like a small... typo to me :)
Once I've had my first cup of coffee this morning I'll take a look, or ask lucky to take a look, and if htere was a typo that made it appear a vote would be permitted to remain open for 17 days rather than 14 days, I am confident an apology will be forthcoming. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

It all happened concommitantly, within like a day. Perhaps you're suggesting that lucky ought to have come here and posted the discussion, waited, then voted, then come back to post the results. But -- and though I can't imagine our efforts were meaningful in some global sense, though I like to believe that every effort helps -- it seemed as though the Haitian relief issue was timely enough that we all vote very quickly and not wait for awhile before casting ballots.
If you feel we moved too quickly on Haitian relief support, I apologize, though we'll likely just disagree on that.
Best,
Gary

I would support a motion to ban typos. :p
Actually, would that fall under the purview of moderation instead?
Actually, would asking whether it fell under the purview of moderation constitute discussion about moderation and subject me to a TOS violation (and potentially disbarment from TB due to a 30-day ban?).
Lets not take ourselves too seriously here - with all due respect to the blood, sweat and tears sacrificed by TalkBoard alumni.
