Its that time of year again... the Iditarod! And AS is offering quite the package in its auction once again

Mileage Plan Auction
Bid On Your Place In The Last Great Race
Iditarod Start — March 6, 2010

https://www.alaskaair.com/as/mileageplan/mpAuctions/Iditarod-Feb10.asp

Iditarod—the Great Race to Nome—overlaps with Alaska Airlines history and heritage, and with this month's auction — courtesy of Alaska Airlines, Hotel Captain Cook, and Thrifty Car Rental in Anchorage, we're offering Mileage Plan members a chance to be part of this tribute to heroic Alaska history.

The sled dogs of the Iditarod had one last taste of glory as the standard means of regional overland transportation in early 1925, when a diphtheria epidemic threatened isolated, icebound Nome. The nearest serum was in Anchorage.

A Pony Express-type relay of dog teams was quickly organized and the first musher took the serum westward down the frozen Tanana River to the Yukon. Every village along the route offered its best team and driver for its leg. The critical crossing of the treacherous Norton Sound ice from Shaktoolik to Golovin was taken by Leonhard Seppala, the territory's premier musher, and his lead dog Togo. Gunnar Kaasen drove the final two legs into Nome behind his lead dog Balto, through a blizzard hurling 80 mph winds.

The serum arrived in time to prevent the epidemic and saved hundreds of lives. A statue of Balto, the heroic lead dog, was erected a year later in New York's Central Park and still exists today.

Spectators and mushers alike hold this story in their hearts and minds at the start of this historic race each year in Anchorage. Celebrate the bond between humans and dogs as they brave Alaska's mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, and desolate tundra.

The package includes First Class round-trip airfare for 2, 5-day Full Size SUV rental* courtesy of Thrifty Car Rental in Anchorage, and a 4-night stay at the Hotel Captain Cook. Nestled in the heart of downtown Anchorage;, the Hotel Captain Cook offers luxury accomodations with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding Chugach mountains and Cook Inlet.

Become a part of this historical event as you watch the sled dogs leave downtown from the Ceremonial starting point on March 6, 2010. As a special treat, we are also offering 2 tickets to the Musher's Banquet, taking place on March 4, 2010, so you can mix and mingle with the hardy assembly of participants and enthusiasts that make the Iditarod great.

Even if you don't win, you can still have an Alaska Airlines Vacation to AlaskaComplete Auction Prize Includes:

* Board Room access —so your vacation can begin as soon as you reach the airport.
* First Class, round-trip airfare for 2 from any Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air city to Anchorage, Alaska.
* 5-day Full Size SUV rental* courtesy of Thrifty Car Rental in Anchorage.
* 4-night stay for 2 at the Hotel Captain Cook
* 2 tickets to the Iditarod Musher's Banquet on March 4, 2010.

If I had the ability to get away that week, I would go for this! For someone like me based near DCA, this is a great deal even at 150k miles.

Oh it would ^

Sounds like quite a nice package that AS has put together for the highest bidder... speaking of which- the bidders are now bidding in increments of one mile  :p

I highly doubt they are bidding in one-mile increments. More likely, they bid thousands of miles more but Alaska is showing it as one-mile to indicate the previous bidder has been outbid. This makes it sort of like a blind auction.

I have bid on this in the past and it showed the full amount I bid. So unless something has changed, I think they are having 'fun' :D

[And in the first post, it shows a bit of their bidding... from 65K to 95K to 100K...]

If that's the case, that's funny! I bet it "blows up" tomorrow and the total jumps much higher.

hmmm what would make it even cooler would be a package auction that Anchorage residents could even bid on too like a trip to OME for 3 days to see the finish :D

I just go a half mile up the road and watch a few teams arrive at the BLM science center

Wow... sounds like you are really close to two three other ANC based FT'ers  (one is sometimes based in ANC :p)

It would be neat to take a day trip up to OME... when do we predict they'll make it in?

NO EXCUSES for ANC to not make it to the next FT gathering at Bob's! ;)
