Nobody here can remember them ever closing schools, let alone a day early.

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? NYC schools almost NEVER close. A day early too??? What's gotten into Mikey to do this?

Since when does the city close school before the independent schools do? :D Considering how wrong the weather forecasters were Saturday, it's odd to say the least. But school kids and teachers must be thrilled.

The news stories are saying the city caught so much crap for not announcing last years until the morning of they went early this time

The news stories are saying the city caught so much crap for not announcing last years until the morning of they went early this timeToo bad for the complainers. They cancelled school at 5:40am. That is what school systems do. Bloomberg rightly 'brushed off' the complaints.

Considering how wrong the weather forecasters were Saturday, it's odd to say the least.Did you read the forecast from the NWS for last Saturday? They specifically said that NYC would be on the fringe of the storm, and that it was going to be very difficult to predict snowfall totals.

Obviously there's much more certainty in tomorrow's forecast.

They better be right this time or nobody will ever believe them again. Businesses are telling people to stay home, Metro North just released a very reduced schedule for the evening commute for those who do come in, etc. If they are wrong, bazillions of dollars will be wasted in lost work, etc.

If there's not the promised ten to sixteen inches by this time tomorrow.....

Pre-emptive closing? We're becoming a city of wussies. I remember my kids going to school during a 15-inch snowstorm, and one single school closing during the combined 15 years that they were in New York City schools.

Today's parents who actually complained about last year's 5:40AM closure are the wussies you describe above, it seems.

That said, I really hope we get snow. Not some 6 inch nothing but some really big snowfall!

The news is staking out the Mayor's Press Conference room to carry live the 5:30 announcement if there will be school or not for tomorrow. Considering how badly they botched the forecast for today (there was no blizzard, just a couple inches) it will be interesting to see if they chicken out for tomorrow.

Bloomberg's reading the announcement in Spanish now.

Ouch!

If anybody knows anybody who needs money, the city is paying $15 an hour for shovelers, up to $18 after 40 hours, call 311 for an assignment.

That's more then we pay our temporary office people. Hope they don't hear that.

At least we got some snow! They say 10 inches fell in Central Park. It was pretty watching it fall yesterday afternoon--like being in a snow globe!

I'll give 99% of the city credit for cleaning it up by this morning. The mayor was telling people to clean their sidewalks so people didn't have to walk in the street, and mentioned they would start issuing tickets to those who didn't.

On the walk to the office this morning, about half the sidewalks were clean and dry, most of the rest clean and wet. The only exception, where the ice was thick, packed, and clear, where it made much more sense to actually walk in the street?

The sidewalks around the library and Bryant Park, city property. I thought that was pretty funny.

The city is indeed to be commended. Even when we had the real blizzard of 2006 with something like 28 inches of snow, the city didn't close down for 4 days. We're not Washington, DC, thank God, a city that lost 25% of its snow plows to breakdowns. Our mayor, while inept on several levels, doesn't let the city shut down for days on end. The Financial Times did a story yesterday about how the DC mayor is under fire for the city's performance after the snow. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/0a6b5e24-1675-11df-bf44-00144feab49a.html

New York is a city whose businesses MUST run; not a city that depends on the federal gov't for work.
