We are planning a three weeks stay in the region next August.

Anybody with experience of driving a rental car between the city of Belize and Cancun ?

Drive time, safety, any alternatives ?

Thank you

I would suspect you'll have a problem finding a rental agency that will let you drive the car between the two countries. There is bus service, but you'll have to change buses in Chetumal.

If I were the OP, I’d fly to Chetumal on Tropic Air and bus it from there. Not sure if there is any type of flight that will take one to Cancun from Chetumal.

Maya Regional Air apparently has service between Cancun and Belize City:

If you're driving a rental car in Mexico expect to be stopped by the cops a lot. We were pulled over 4 times on the short drive between Cancun and Playa del Carmen once.

Juiceman---how long ago was that? I've driven in the Yucatan more than 20 times over 6 years and have never once been stopped by a cop. In any other Mexican state either. None of the expats I know there have ever had any trouble except when they had a light out or were speeding---like here.

Anyway, roads down to the Belize border are fine, then they get worse as soon as you cross. The issue though is crossing the border with a car. I don't know of any rental agencies that will allow you to do that and the border guards will demand papers with explicit permission, proof of insurance, etc. More hassle than it's worth.

This was in 2000. On all my other visits to Merida and the region after that we relied on the bus system, which I might add is very comfortable and inexpensive.

More hassle than it's worth.

And what about the opposite way: renting in Belize and driving towards Cancun ?
