This may be sort of a dumb question but since I am a little new to this I will ask anyway. After qualifying for gold or platinum or diamond, is it like airlines where you get a new card valid for the year or do you keep the same blue one and only the status in the computer changes?

You get a new card valid for one year mailed to you.

You will get new cards, relatively fast. (At least here, in the US). Actually it is does not really matter. If you make reservation through the website, or you mention your number when you make it through phone, the number - with your current status - will be "in the system". Nobody at the hotels ever interested to see our cards. (Neither in US or Europe)

And even if you show them, upgrade can be seen perhaps in the dreams only. Up to now, all my stays every now and then, which have been in BW I have had to retrocredit.

Only advantage I can see with metal with BW is if you go for points instead of airline miles with the bonus points. The only time I get upgraded as a platnium is at a BW I typically stay at and got upgraded all the time when I was just gold since I stay there all the time. I don't think status really matters like with Hilton.

It isn't like they have executive lounges like at some hiltons and they don't give you the option of 1000 to 2000 bonus points or another perk like Hilton does if they can't upgrade you.

I've stopped using BW hotels despite recently reaching the dizzy heights of Diamond. I can't remember ever getting an upgrade at a BW property (often becuase they only had one type of room) and have found that the "elite experience" is better with Hilton Silver or Priority Club Gold.

All I have to do now is spend the 300,000 points I have accumulated!

You have to be at least gold to get upgrades with Hilton and even at Gold I don't get them that often. You used to get exec lounge access with gold at hilton if you couldn't get upgraded to the tower level but no more, that is only for diamonds. One nice thing about hilton though is you get both airliens miles and hilton points.

Plenty of thing you can do with the points. I would use them for airline miles if you aren't staying with BW anymore or for gift cards.'

But Hilton HHonors Gold, even if doesn't get you an upgraded room, will get you a free breakfast (at those hotels which don't provide it to everyone). It would be nice if at least one of BW's elite levels provided that.
