Midwest Airlines Midwest Miles (Pre-Alignment) - Buy one of the old Signature Seats

They're for sale, but not to the general public.

Some of the seats were from the 717s, while others are the older vintage from the MD-80s.

I will start the bidding right here..$100, $200, $300? You guys did say you wanted signature seats, right? (Which discontinued YX ammenities do you miss?)

I'd like to have some of these, but I may have to get somebody to pick them up for me. Sounds like I'm going to be in Denver on Friday.

You need to be a serious die hard YX junkie to get these.

I'd like to get a set of these, but it's probably not very practical to have in one's home. They would be a little awkward...plus, I think Mrs. Newsman would probably not be too thrilled.

It would be very cool to purchase a set, though.

Hmm...wonder where these seats would look half-decent?

Oh yeah... they'd look great in just about any living room. And are in near mint condition except for the gnarly smell from sweaty businessmen and the odd stain which came from god knows where....

I'm in the same situation as you. It would ke kind of cool to grab a pair of seats but what would I do with them? My wife would probably not want these in our house, either.

Personally, I'd only want seats from the 717s.

Remember how many Signature Seats were in the hangar when we had our tour as part of the DO last summer? There were hundreds if not thousands being stored.

Yes, they were lined up near the rafters. I remember being in there several years ago as well, and they had the older seats from the DC-9s up there, too.

If only I could come up with some way to make them look good. If my basement were finished, maybe there, but it's not so they'd probably just collect dust.

I HATE ebay - I just wanna know what's it going to cost ahead of time, so I can plan/make arrangements. This bidding crap - I've never had a good ebay experience.

Enough of that rant - I'd MAKE room for a set of these babies, decor be damned!

Blue, don't you still have some connections at Midwest? If not, Mostly Air would be the most logical choice.

Yes, I still know a few individuals at Midwest that may be able to help me with this.

However, MostlyAir has been a good resource on this board and may be able to help out others interested in the seats as well.

I cant say that I have ever walked through the museum, but I imagine they have benches for people to sit on and rest...I say they replace those with signature seats.

Open Invitation if you Want Seats

If you want to purchase any of the signature seats this Saturday, let me know and I will help you get them.

I was just at the hangar and I was told that they have 1,200 seats and they're desperate to get rid of them. The Republic employee stipulation is only in there for security reasons at the hangar.

Details:
First send me a private message and I will give you some contact information. I will then be at the Midwest Airlines hangar between 8 and 10 AM on Saturday. When you meet me, I will escort you into the hangar to get the seats that you want and we will carry them out. Don't forget to bring cash for the amount of seats that you want. $50 for a set of 2 (Sig or Saver) $75 for a set of 3 (saver). Also, you will need a way to transport the seats, because I won't and the people at the hangar will not help you transport or store them for you. I would suggest a vehicle that has the room that you need for the seats.

The seats are pretty light so they should be easy to carry. Also, most of them look to be in descent condition and there is a fare amount to pick from (1,200). They fit well into any office.

The prices listed are the price for employees, so there is no markup, gratuity is always welcome. :D

Let me know!

UPDATE (01/07)

I will NOT be taking anymore requests after the end of today (01/07) so if you want the seats, send your private message.

There are quite a few people already that want seats, and I want to be able to help each one of you fairly, also I will be in Denver tomorrow and will not be able to respond to anyone.

I sure as hell wish I could participate, but I'd have no way to be there/provide transportation. I remember when I lived in Kansas City in the 80's, there was this local late-night TV show and the host announced he was giving away a set of airline seats to the 1st person that showed up at the studio. I almost cried, because I had no way to get there in time!!

How about a report on how the seat pick-up went, including your personalized experience from selection, to loading on vehicle, to set-up?

Pics would also be great!

I can image the sight of two or three rows of Signature Seats, all standing upright in a flatbed, riding down the interstate. Must have been awesome. :D

We were in the front of the line, 30th person in and didn't leave until 10 or so. Someone brought a huge rider truck and bought either 50 seats or sets of seats, not sure but that was the rumor. It was kinda disorganized but they didn't think so many people would show up. I'm guessing there were about 200-400 people there or more. A few people drove from Indy.
I don't think there will too many seats left if any at all. I took my set of three in a minivan, it was tight but it got the job done!
The forum will not allow me to post pics, not enough posts I guess. The seats need a good cleaning but they are in overall good shape.

I purchased 13A and B. It features center tray tables. In the seat back pockets is a vomit bag, a Sept/October 2008 copy of "My Midwest" and a SkyMall catalog.
The seats were stored two to a box. Foklift drivers were bring them to the floor and various employees would then rip them open. The line moved very sloooowly because of the forklift action. Maybe five people could shop at once. The temptation was to look in each box as it was opened to see if the seats in it were any better than the ones already on the floor.
I arrived at 0800 and left at 1100.
Amazingly, I was standing in line with M/M newsmanhoss and BlueHorseShoe. Never met them before. What are the odds of that happening! So guys, how'd you fare at the sale?
My seats are parked in front of our picture window. I can fasten my seat belt and watch the world go by. It's odd, believe me.
Any guesses on street value?

Well, here's my account. I will try to include as many details as possible.

BlueHorseShoe2000 and I arrived around 8, and found ourselves pretty far back in the line outside of the east hangar. This is the hangar that SkyWest temporarily used until Republic purchased Midwest. There were at least a couple hundred people waiting outside in 10 degree weather. We were out there for 1-1.5 hours before we were able to get into the hangar, and it was a long cold wait. Blue, YX/AP, my wife and myself waited for quite a while. We rotated in shifts going back to my heated car. I wasn't expecting to have to wait outside, so all I had was my coat....no gloves, hat, earmuffs, or scarf. That's okay though.

After my wife held our place in line and we took a quick trip over to a gas station to fill up and get some coffee, we made it back just in time to get into the hangar. We probably waited for maybe another hour after getting inside.

In my opinion, the whole thing seemed to be pretty disorganized. There certainly could have been a much better way to prepare. YX employees were using forklifts to remove seats from the rafters of the hangar (you'd think they could have ahd this all done ahead of time). Most of these seats had either been sitting uncovered or had thin sheets of plastic covering them. Other seats were brought up from far corners of the hangar...many of these were stored on pallets and then covered with cardboard boxes (incidentally these were 2-across wide signature seats, but stored in cardboard boxes labeled Recaro that were previously used to deliver the newer 3-across leather saver seats that were installed on the 717s.

At first, there was an E-170 in the hangar, and they decided to push it outside (using an F9-branded tug) to make room for more seats as they were pulled down. That cooled things down for about five minutes!

The vast majority of seats sold appeared to be the wide signature seats from the 717s. As previously mentioned, seats were sold for $50 per pair. For most of time spent waiting in the hangar, they would only let small groups out into the hangar floor to make their selections.

It was quite a while until we finally made it up to the table where the seats are purchased. Buyers filled out slips of paper indicating how many seats were being purchased. The money was placed into an envelope and into the slot of a secure metal box. After you paid, it was a free-for-all. You could choose from the available seats.

It was somewhat chaotic, and you had to be pretty aggressive as the forklifts brought pallets over. It was clear that Republic didn't have any corporate/legal folks there, because it probably wasn't a good idea to have members of the public milling around at risk of being hit by the multiple forklifts running around the facility. I did see Greg Aretakis briefly (he was recently promoted to VP of revenue production for YX/F9 after serving as VP of planning and revenue management for Midwest).

Many of the seats on the floor had already been claimed by the time we got out there. It was interesting to jockey for the best seat. Some of them were damaged. Some were dirty. Some of them still had MyMidwest magazines, SkyMall catalogs, safety information cards, and sick bags in the seat back pockets.

You had to look closely depending on what kind of seats you were looking for. Some reclined and some didn't. Some were exit rows with the tray table in the armrest. Some of the exit row seats reclined, while others didn't. Some of the leather looked brand new, while others had seen better days. Some didn't have the proper trim pieces. Having said all that, some were perfectly fine.

By the time we made our selections, almost all seats on the floor were claimed. So, Blue and I made some initial selections and put them aside, but waited to see what else was brought over by the workers. You had to be very aggressive to get the seats you wanted, as several people (including me) were peering into the boxes like vultures when they were brought over.

After unloading seats from the forklift, workers quickly scratched off the serial numbers, etc from he metal under the seat cushion. This was to ensure that the seats could not be sold to another airline.

Later, they started bringing out old MD-80/DC-9 seats (these are the ones that do not have footrests or adjustable headrests). Some of them still had aircell telephones on the back of the headrest. Interestingly, while some of these were in extremely poor condition, some of them appeared to never have been used. There were in perfect shape.

In the end, I chose a pair of exit row seats that had leather that was barely worn. I chose an exit row because it's somewhat more functional to have the tray tables available in the armrest, rather than on the back (I'll probably have them up against a wall anyway, especially because my set doesn't recline). Blue chose seat of regular seat in pretty good condition. (We traded out some of the seat bottoms for others in better shape, too).

The seats were attached to a piece of wood that was then screwed on to the pallet. A screwdriver was all that was necessary to detach them (along with my wife's cowboy boots, which came in handy as she "broke/snapped" the seats off of the wooden rails they were attached to).

It appeared that most people bought one or two pairs, while others bought many. In fact, there were a couple guys that bought 12 pairs! That's 24 seats! They're each taking 12 seats to create a home theater....now that would be cool! (more about them later)

We got Blue's seats loaded into his vehicle just fine. They fit perfectly. Mine didn't, so I was able to convince the 24-seat people to let me put one more pair of seats into the moving van that they had rented. THey were kind enough to bring my seats to my house. Had they not been so generous, I'm not so sure that I would have gotten my seats home without a huge hassle. Otherwise, I was considering just selling my seats at face value to someone else who wanted exit row seats (they seemed to garner more interest than the regular seats).

All in all, it was a long day spent at the hangar. Mrs. Newsman and I were there from 8am until about 1pm. I think that more people showed up than Midwest expected, but that's probably good, because they were rumored to have 1,200 seats to sell.

While I was waiting and helping load all those seats into the moving van, I took another look around the bowels of the hangar. There were plenty of the old signature seats from the Mad Dogs, some of the narrower blue seats from when Saver Service was first introduced and some of the newer leather narrow Saver seats.

I did take some pictures on my phone, but haven't had a chance to pull them off yet. It's too bad that there's no way to post pictures on FT.

In closing, it was just odd that an airline would store these seats in a hangar for years (especially the older MD-80s seats). It makes one wonder why they squirreled these seats away for so long. Did they think they might need them again someday? Did Tim Hoeksema have delusions of going back to the all signature seat concept? Some may never know. Interesting nonetheless.

Thanks to MostlyAir for making this possible. I don't think I would have bothered going over to the hangar without knowing for sure that I could get access. It was also good to see BlueHorseShoe2000 again. It was an interesting, yet bizarre, event to witness. These seats are certainly a piece of Milwaukee (and aviation) history. I'm sure someday, I'll find a way to display/utilize these seats properly. In the meantime, they'll sit in the basement covered in plastic.

Hope you enjoyed my take on this strange event! If you've made it down this far in my post, congratulations. I believe this is the longest post I have ever written.

Newsmanhoss and YX/AP did a great job of summarizing the whole experience so I can't really add much more.

I would like to give a big thanks to MostlyAir for making this happen. It was nice to meet you and learn more about your role at Midwest.

It was also great to meet YX/AP, who by chance was standing directly in front of me when I first got in line. Talking to you, newsmanhoss, and newsmanhoss's wife certainly made the long wait in the cold much more bearable. Hopefully you got a good set of seats.

Newsmanhoss-it was nice to see you and your wife again as well. I'm glad everything worked out for you. I would like to point out that newsmanhoss's wife was a great sport during this whole ordeal and did an excellent job guarding our seats from potential poachers as we continued searching for seats in even better condition.

And for mke9499, I saw this when I was leaving the hangar and snapped a picture just for you:

How are you suppose to prepare for something like this? YX has a lot of seats and could not put them out a head of time. Hope you know that the maintenance is a 24 hour operation. Everyone was busy working on the planes which always come before anything. By the way your were wrong about the 170. There was a repair being done on it and it was finished. If it was the 170 being repaired or the seats it would of been the 170 being fixed. The reason it was pushed back was it had a flight to get to. Imagine that.

The fastest way was the fork lifts and they were doing an excellent job at it. They had seat stacked 2 high while trying to get around all the clueless people that were just standing around hoping the find the perfect seat that was never coming.

By the way, the price of one of these seats used in good condition was $12,000. Yes that is $12,000 and my facts are straight from the books. You got a hell of a deal. That explains why they were keeping them. They were hoping to sell the seats to another airlines but were not able to. They just decided to give them away for $50.

YX made everyone stand outside and only allowed a few to pick out their seats at a time for a very good reason. Think about just letting everyone to go pick out a seat at one time. Oh your day was nothing compared to the people that were working. Having to pick up after you guys just through pallets and boxes all over the place.

Oh wait almost forgot. There were NO DC-9 seats. Those were sold a long time ago to employees. They were all MD 80 or 717 seats.

There are some seats left but the chances of a non employee getting one now at very slim.

They knew a head of time that it was going to be chaos. There was not way to prepare because once again it is a 24 hour operation and the seats were last on the list of the to do list.

Edit:
I'm sorry if it seems like I came hard at you but I had a very long day today. I was trying to get seats too but I think YX did a great job.

First of all it was great meeting everyone that participated in the seat sale from flyertalk. Like the people at the hangar I was somewhat unprepared with what happened this morning and if I missed anyone I'm deeply sorry. I did my best to help everyone out. For the people that got their seats, I hope that you enjoy them and I know that they found some good homes.

Hoss pretty much summed it up for how organized it was. I was at the front of the line, with someone from flyertalk, and by the time that I got to the door, probably about an hour of standing out in the cold, which feels like 3, they decided to move the line into the hangar, into the warmth! Hour by hour they improved their organization and were able to get people moving decently fast when it got to the end. One problem was that everyone that wanted to buy seats was there by 8:30 AM. And the people that were getting a ton of them, one person for a party bus, were at the front of the line. Ryder and U-Haul vans sitting outside.

Once again it was great to meet the people that came and help them out. It was great to get the perspective of the people that pay attention the most to airlines.

Nothing like some heavy lifting for a Saturday, the missed thing from living in a cubicle.

Enjoy your seats!

Being a witness to this whole process, I can certainly appreciate that you did indeed have a very long day. As a non-employee, I certainly felt lucky enough to be able to purchase a set of seats and would like to thank you and everyone else who made this possible. The employees in the hangar did a great job helping everyone get seats (moving seats by fork-lift, unpacking them, un-screwing them from the pallets, etc.) and were very patient as well.

Watching everything unfold this morning, I also thought things seemed a bit disorganized. Based on your post, perhaps how everything operated today was the best that could be done.

Thanks again for helping out today^

Fair points. I was just explaining the scene from my point of view to the best of my ability, and it's good to hear your points also. I appreciate all of the hard work from the crews working on the hangar that day. They were all polite and worked very hard to get as many seats sold as possible. There were, however, a number of employees I talked with, including Greg Aretakis, who were surprised at the number of buyers who showed up. It appeared that they weren't expecting this many people.

$12,000 per seat? WOW! I wonder if there would have been more interest if they were discounted for other another airline? Maybe not for any carriers based in the U.S, but I wonder if an upstart airline overseas might have been interested in some used brown leather premium-class seats if they could have gotten them well below market value?

You're right...At $50, these were a great deal, and I think my post did indicate that I appreciated the opportunity.

Thanks for answering my questions and clarifying some of my points.

It sounds like you all performed combat duty to secure your seats; it's nice to hear of the teamwork.

Does anyone know if all of the seat inventory sold today? Did Republic hold back any stock?

I may have access to some pictures of the event; I will try to post them, if possible.

Yeah I realize. I could see how it was disorganized but I think YX employees did a great job. I hope you and everyone else enjoys their seats. Its great to so many YX fans including you guys and myself.

There are still some seats left. The 717 seats that were left were not in great shape but were still in okay to good shape. There are still savior service seats left that is in great condition. The savior seats are smaller and consists of 2 and 3 seat configuration. Also, there are still MD 80 seats that are in great condition.

In my opinion if anyone wants a seat in good condition and gets a chance to, get one grab a MD 80 seat or two.

Now I'm not sure about what they did with the CRJ-200 seats, I know YX owned them but they may of been able to sell them to another airline. Those seats were not that good anyways. For one they were small and for two in only has 1 leg to stand on. the window seat connected to the side of the aircraft.

For those who got a seat I hope you got what you wanted and I hope you can enjoy them.

Yes I do agree that they will go for a least a few $100. Not sure what how much people are willing to sell/buy though. Getting up early and waiting out in the cold for a few hours should get you something.

If anyone has kind of a beaten up arm rest I do believe there are some tricks that you can look up to make them look better. If I'm correct the 717's arm rest are leather. Not sure which kind of seats they are but some are plastic that don't ware like the 717's seat. I think those ones are the 2 by 3 seats though.

The seller's minimum is $450 for cloth (but new) B747 Iberia seats. There is no comparison between those and my exit row leather Recaro seats with spacious center console and flip out tray tables. It's like comparing chocolate chip cookies to olives. :D

First off, thanks for MostlyAir for offering to help get us in. It was a lot more busy than I thought it would be. I got there at about 8:30am thinking I would just walk in and grab a set of seats, man was I wrong. I only spent about 10mins outside before the let everyone wait inside the hangar to stay warm. After about 3 hours waiting in a line that never seemed to move I finally made it to the front to pay. Once getting to the area to chose seats most of the displayed ones were all damage so I had to wait for the forks to bring down more seats. I wanted to get a nice set and for the most part my two sets were in pretty good shape. I would have like to try and wait for more seats to be opened up but I had enough of waiting around and just wanted to get out of there. It sounds like I must of ran across of a few of you guys out there on the floor getting seats, I finally got my seats by about noonish and some had said they were there till one. I cleaned up my first set with clorox wipes but some parts are heavily worn down. Does anyone have any cleaning tips for these?

Well, here's my account. I will try to include as many details as possible.

[snip...]

Hope you enjoyed my take on this strange event! If you've made it down this far in my post, congratulations. I believe this is the longest post I have ever written.

Thank you for all the details! Now I know what I missed....

I was like everyone else who seemed to get there right at 8 a.m. :) I waited in line until I started to not be able to feel my fingers and toes anymore so it was definitely time to head back to the car!

I was pulling away when I looked back at the hangar, and hey!, everyone is going inside. So I parked the car again and got inside, thanks to MostlyAir, who was a tremendous help all day and showed incredible patience assisting everyone. He showed me his call log on his cell phone and quite a few people were contacting him!

I stuck it out inside for another 30-45 minutes and had to bail because the line wasn't moving and I had to get home to watch my son while my wife went to an appointment.

I didn't get a set of seats, but it was cool to talk to some of the people in line including former pilots and a people from the meal-preparation department. And the aforementioned Mostly Air, who did yeoman work all day.

So anyone can feel free to PM me if they want to part with a pair of Signature Seats!

Yeah I saw that too, it seems to have some damage on it though. The seller should point that out and explain that they are not first class seats. They are considered business class seats.

I don't think he will get $225 for a seat like that because of the damage. Some of the better ones will go over $225 though.

For the aluminum parts a multipurpose cleaner will work. For the leather you can purchase leather cleaner and conditioner at a auto parts store or a higher quality products from here:

Here is a great post on leather seats for cars but I think it will work for these seats as well. The forum is a great resource for additional tips.

To those that didn't win the seats, I'm trying to coordinate another sale which would be open to the public. I should know by next week Wednesday if I can do it. Stay tuned and sorry you didn't win. It would be helpful if our fans could let me know what level of interest there would be for a public sale. The Signature seat set would be $50 and the Saver seat set (three narrower seats) would be $75. Let me know you're interest.

Hopefully, they will limit the number of seats, per person, this time. If opened to the public, and handled in the same manner as the first sale, I can picture things getting out of control.

They need to set some parameters.

I'm going to work with the folks at Republic to gauge their interest in a public sale. The interest on Facebook has been really good so far. One caveat is that it will have to be on a weekday because I won't be able to manage the sale over the upcoming weekend (going to in-laws...boo!). What would be nice is to know how many of you here are interested in buying seats. I can't guarantee there will be enough 717 Sigs for everyone, but there are MD-80 Sigs and Saver seats left as well.

Not sure if anyone is interested but there is a way to make the seats recline more. Under the cushion of the seat there is a cylinder that is attached to a threaded bolt, which has a larger wheel that can be turned back a nut. This will allow the seats to recline more. Pretty easy to do.

I managed to get 4 sets of the 717 seats which look fantastic in my living room! I threw out a sofa and coffee table to make room for them, and they look awesome! Please let me know when the next sale will be, as I asked about the older seats but was told they were buried and it would take a while to get them out. We had already waited for hours, so didn't feel like waiting around any longer, and I was excited to get my seats home, cleaned up and inside my living room! Also thanks 8C4IOW for the reclining tip! Now I just need some leather ottomans for feet and my living room will be SO comfortable. I have a reclining exit row next to my Concorde window..perfect! I can email pictures on request.

Sounds very cool! I, for one, think it would be great if you can post a link for pics.

I'd be curious to see how yxfa's living room looks with the 717 seats.

Hmmm.....were you toward the front of the line? Wearing a United jacket? And directly behind me? Self proclaimed aviation buff that would like to live in an airplane from the boneyard?

Don't do facebook...call me old fashioned, but that's just me. If anyone wants to send me a message with an email I can send some pictures that way. Actually I am in MCI at the moment in my crash pad, but once I get back home to MKE I will be happy to email them. I should be home Sunday night, weather and space permitting.

I have a broken back and inhaled 3-year old dust from the hangar for five hours, but the sale is on! I'll be posting the sale details to Facebook later tonight, as well as posting a link to it from here, and a tweet with a link to it as well. I hope you all can make it. The sale will be on Wednesday of next week. All proceeds will be donated to the MACC Fund.

FYI: There are a limited number of Signature seats so you will have to be one of the first twenty or so people in line to have a good chance of getting a set, but there's dozens of Saver seats in sets of 2 and 3. Overall the Saver seats are in great condition, and the Signature (both 717 and MD80) are in good condition.

Do you know if it will be badged employees only again? I will be back in MCI Tuesday night, so won't be able to attend this one. If it is not limited to badged employees I can send a friend to get a set.

Sorry about your sore back; hopefully, a good night's sleep will help.

Thanks for putting a new sale together. Out of curiosity, has there been an actual inventory taken of remaining sets of seats? Will be there be a limit to quantity, per person (to enable employees and enthusiasts a fair shot against dealers, who are only interested in making a quick buck)?

The MACC Fund is a nice gesture; I am sure they appreciate it.

Good luck with the sale. Hope there will be some equipment on-site to move the seats. No more broken backs allowed!

Does anyone know the dimension of the signature seats or the saver seats? Just want to know if they will fit in my suv or if I should get a truck.

Thanks

Just want to add my thanks to bluethunder for organizing another seat sale. I realize it doesn't start until 9 a.m. but would it help to get there early to get a remaining Signature seat? I'm not going to camp out overnight, but I'm thinking 8 a.m.?

Do your dogs like the Signature Seats as well?

Thanks for sharing!

I was able to try some cleaning techniques on the seats.
First I used a Magic Eraser with water and some fabric softener to scrub the seats. I didn't scrub too hard but hard enough so some of the dirt would come off. After I scrubbed the whole seat I cleaned it with Zymol leather cleaner, which I found at Target in the automotive section. I followed the directions on the bottle to clean the seat. I then used Zymol leather conditioner to condition the seats. It made a world of difference on the leather.

For the aluminum I used a degreaser to clean the dirt off. I then used Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. I followed the directions on the can of polish.

I still need to go over the seats again but I wanted to see if this process worked and it seems to.

This is probably going to be my next step in trying to restore the seats to look not so worn once I purchase the products and have time to apply them.

I'm pretty sure this will do the trick and it includes a better write up than I could do.
