I am planning a trip to Havana, Cuba in February and I am looking for the cheapest available route from CPH to HAV (or any other international airport on Cuba).
Kayak.com tells me I cannot search on Cuba due to US travel restrictions and on ITA I keep getting no results regardless of dates or any other changes I make. It does not say anything about the travel restrictions though. Anyone know if ITA have blocked searches on Cuba?
Is there any other good place to find the cheapest available travels to Cuba in a one month period?
Thanks in advance.

As you know, SirRagner, the U.S. embargo against Cuba is pretty much complete. Thus, you are coming up empty in your searches when using U.S. based internet search engines. In fact, in some southern U.S. cities, the daily weather report even omits that island from the regional map!
I have heard that a person can fly, in the Western hemisphere, from Mexico and from Jamaica to Havana. Such a person could consult the websites of Air Jamaica and Aeromexico or Mexicana, adjust the country setting to the native country (Jamaica or Mexico, as appropriate), and then search.
Similarly for airlines from countries in the Easter hemisphere. Perhaps you might already know which European airlines fly to Havana? Perhaps Iberia, Air France, Lufthansa ... You must check them out individually and use their home country for the website location.
You might also check out some of the European-based online services such as Opodo, which has I recollect a British and a German presence.
Let us know how things turn out for you in your search! (p.s. as I was typing this response to you, two entries advertised on the webpage: Travelzoo and also Cubana de Aviacion. I have not checked either of them out; perhaps you might find them fruitful for information for your desired vacation.)

Thanks for the reply. Yea, I am familiar with the embargo but I was not aware it dug so deep as search engines omitting the country also.
I have checked the European carriers and Iberia, Air France, Martinair (KLM's) and AirEuropa flies to Havana. I can't seem to find any easy star alliance route there. Only AirCanada seems to fly there from Toronto as far as I see.
Oh well, I was hoping to use ITA's month search to find the best time to travel, but guess I need to search the hard way and figure out which airline I'll use.

You can search from some Canadian websites... But not canadian websites based out of the US. e.g.: www.expedia.ca doesn't let you search Cuban destinations. You can use aircanada (obviously only for their own flights).
Look at non-US based travel sites.

Thanks!
I've narrowed it down to pretty much only Air France as a viable option. With AirCanada and Iberia I need to spend a night in either Toronto or Madrid and the only other options are LCC's like AirEuropa, Martinair and Condor.
AirFrance has two connections out of CDG to HAV. One with a B777-300ER and one with a B747-400. They are pretty similar in price so question is which to take. Does anyone have any experience with those two AirFrance planes in Economy?

Use a travel agent - there are plenty of very cheap charter flights from Europe to Havana. It might even be cheaper to buy a package that includes hotel.

Here are the lowest published fares on your route. However, as erik123 has already mentioned, an air+hotel package is likely to be a cheaper option, given the destination:

If you can fly via the UK, you could also check Virgin Atlantic. They fly LGW-HAV, and I think that Virgin Holidays offer packages to Cuba also.
There's also Mexicana from MEX, and Mexicana's Click from CUN. Though the fares to Cuba from Mexico aren't usually that low, CUN-HAV might be an option if you could get something cheap to CUN from Europe.
If this is your first visit to Cuba, one thing I'd suggest is that it might be worth paying a little extra for a ticket that gives you flexibility to change your return date. Cuba is different, and a fair number of people who visit the island for the first time either discover that they hate the place and want to leave sooner than they had planned, or fall head over heels in love with it and want to stay longer.
If you decide on AF, you should post your question about the 744/77W on the AF forum. Many posters there are sure to be able to tell you all about the ins and outs of both, and you're sure to get a quick answer. :)

Thanks for the info, guys.
I had already looked it up with KVS tool also, but I am still very new to that so I am struggling to interpret the results and replicate them in a booking search engine. I suppose it is because all the cheapest options needs to be booked well in advance? Like the AF with fare code QLSBAFDK:

I don't suppose any booking engine will let you book based on fare basis code?
I will be looking into the hotel+flight options today, but I really despise LCC's and would hate to end up in a cramped LCC all the way to Cuba. There is quite a selection of those going to Cuba though; Condor, Martinair and AirEuropa but it's a long haul to be stuck with very limited leg room :(

a bit OT but I was looking at a thread in the JAL section and the advertising banner at the top and bottom of the thread were for tours to Cuba. The ad was in Japanese so probably not a lot of help in this situation though.

We just returned from Cuba, Finnair from HEL to CDG and Air France from CDG to HAV. The flight from/to Havanna is often late.
For economy, the best place is the upper deck on the 747 flight. The AF flights are very economy-heavy, the 777 has 422 Y (17"), 36 premY (18") and 14 C seats. On the 747 flight, you actually get premY seat pitch on the upper deck, 17.5" downstairs. AF seems to use the 777 for the high season flights.
You may also want to check where Cubana fly. We had domestic flights from Havanna to Santiago, on AeroCaribbean (ATR) and Cubana (YAK-42). Both were super-smooth, although we had to change the e-ticket on AeroCaribbean to a paper ticket. Airport procedures were fast and efficient. I was really disappointed, you get a more realistic cuban flight experience in the US.
The embargo is such a joke and lack of cuban flights on search engines just emphasizes it. The new pool mattresses at Nacional's pool are made in Texas, the Pellegrinos in all the restaurants have US labels, you can even find Coca Cola. TV's are everywhere and the local stations are showing shows like Grey's Anatomy and CSI. People had HP laptops and at the Cubana office the PC's had HP laser printers and APC UPS'es.
If they have the money, they can get anything through Mexico or some other neighbouring country who don't care much. Not that it matters that much because they get everything from China, just like the US. However I'm not suggesting dropping the embargo. Cuba is pretty nice with the multinational tourist flow and it would benefit the most to the country if it opened the China way.

As we travel twice per year to HAV we recommend DE (Condor) for the longhaul (FRA-HAV), operates only once per week on mondays. Except peak season (New Year) you get bargains for around 400 € RT (= 600 US $) plus a cheap feeder on *A to get to FRA.
Eco+ is 100 € for FRA-HAV and (with a little luck) 50 € HAV-FRA. Business (called Condor Comfort Class) on DE is around 500 € per leg. You can even buy the upgrade onboard.
IB on MAD-HAV is quite often late, very late. Sometimes 24 hours.
AF has, as already mentioned, special layouts for the Carribean and the seats are no fun.
Avoid Blue Panorama operating from MXP.

OP, if you need SK miles AC is your only option. I have done the CPH/ARN-EWR-YYZ-HAV many times even on award. You can also ticket the SK/UA/AC routing with SAS. The UA segment is allowed. That is if you prefer a stop over in NYC. Can be nice as shopping opportunities are slim in Cuba. PM me if you need a nice and cheap room in HAV or elsewhere.

Thanks for the info - we actually ended up going to Hawai'i instead through the SK offer of NYC + Hawai'i.
We are probably going to HAV next year though and I might take you up on that room offer :)
