Welcome to our new official M&M lurker M&M_App_Team!
M&M_App_Team is an M&M employee and he and his team seek to develop an M&M community app for the iPhone and Blackberry. The app is based on a meta-community approach and those of you who attended the Star Mega Do may know the app already.
So M&M_App_Team is not actually a "normal" lurker answering question and providing help for our day to day M&M problems but he is rather interested in our input and feedback regarding the app. But I leave it to M&M_App_Team to explain in detail what the app is all about, were to get it and so on. Feel free to ask questions :)
Just let me stress, that he is interested in an open dialogue and we won't need to fill any surveys or the like. It is more about us helping to create a tool for us M&M frequent flyers based on FT and other communities.

PS: This thread is just for the "welcome" part and we'll have another one for feedback on the app later.

I'm happy to join you here on FlyerTalk! First of all I want to thank the moderators and Randy that we can share our ideas and thoughts with you here about mobile apps for frequent flyers.
It was already a pleasure to have so many of you in FRA during the Star Mega Do where I had the chance to get to know some of you personally.
Especially the participants of the Miles & More workshop for our new app "Miles & More MemberScout" got to know the whole team of us and some of our colleagues at the developer's company Match2Blue.
My name is Torsten Wingenter and I joined Miles & More about 3 years ago for business development especially for Miles & More Intl. GmbH which takes care of our Miles & More partners. Since a half year I'm working on social media for Lufthansa where we e.g. developed MySkyStatus.com in NYC. Two weeks ago I launched the new LH facebook fanpage (http://www.facebook.com/Lufthansa) and the LH company profile (https://www.xing.com/companies/deutschelufthansaag) on the German business networking platform XING.
Therefore I would like to go new ways with LH in the future - please have patience with us when it doesn't go as quick always as we all would love it - and to develop more ideas and tools together with our customers, fans and especially our most frequent flyers.
This is why I'm here and why we released the preview version of our app with the FT co-branding featuring the Mega Do. Unfortunately, it took almost 4 weeks till Apple approved and released it so that the FTers couldn't download it before their trip and we just had it the morning our workshop was where we invited the FTers to give us their feedback...
With a FT-thread I would like to continue to collect your feedback and valuable input - the idea is to develop the final release based on your input, help and ideas, which we communicate to everybody and not only here.
At Miles & More we didn't want to create some kind of articifial community because everybody has found already his/her favorite community therefore I thought it would be great if we could have something which the communities can connect with to each other while they are traveling (hopefully with us ;-)! E. g. to check location-based who's around at the airport when you have suddenly a long stopover or to ask other members or fellows spontaneously for tips and hints what to do at the location (without starting your laptop).
Here you can download a free preview version (itms://ax.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=336170776) for Apple iPhone (Blackberry soon to come, Android t.b.d)! It doesn't have the perfection you are (hopefully) used to from us - the idea was to give you a rough idea and develop the app further with your ideas when you like it and give us a positive signal that we are on the right track.
Now, I'm looking forward to get your feedback, hints and ideas - and please be patient when we can't realize everything instantly or when I don't make it always to answer quickly!

The Apple App is quite nice, but it needs more users to be really beneficial.
Sometimes the app still crashes though. I can't seem to figure out when but it does.

Great to have your feedback here, Rambuster, after we "met" before already in the app! :)
When we have integrated the first input and done some homework (like finetuning privacy settings, improve public message inbox with sorting/filtering/search options etc.) we want to communicate the app to all Miles & More members (and not only here at FT), so that we will have a significant number of members using it, hopefully! Moreover Blackberry should follow, other platforms we have to see.
As you can see all is in the flow and work in progress. So far nothing is carved in stone, really depending on the input we are getting, the preview is just the basis for discussion and your feedback!
The most important for us is to get an idea if we should go on with the idea and if we are on the right track with this idea of a "meta-community" app with messaging on the run and member-helps-member functionality for spontaneous tips between frequent flyers.
I'm happy to hear that you like so far the idea and that you are so active in the app :) - because many people still hesitate asking/answering questions!

Looking forward to the BB app. I assume it will be like the one for the Iphone, just BB adjusted. Is there a way to look at the current app (Iphone) without actually having an Iphone?

Normally you can see some screenshots of the app in the app store. You can use iTunes to access the app store. NOt sure if they provide pictures for the M&M app as well and I can check right now

I am about to redo my entire system on my computer (XP to W7), so I just deinstalled iTunes but will definitely check it out once I have it back on my computer!

1. As it is, the app rejects my nick from FT as being too short. I would like to have the same nick on the app as here.
2. While "scouting around" I would like to be able to filter (not just sort) by groups. I haven't been able to search only for people from FT.

No offense Torsten - but I think personally that your employer should focus its funds on other services rather than someĻapps ... Might be the Flintstone side in me with regards to electronics - but the petty penny pinching that becomes more and more evident through Climb is getting on my nerves - combined with the services standards deterioating more and more - OK I have just come of a CPT flight - and doing this route a couple of times a year - it is by far the most atrocious when looking at crew performance or more so lack thereoff.
If you can not get the basics right - then I feel the investment should be done there and not elsewhere. The nickel and diming - a C tix does cost a tad - and that salt and pepper has been removed from the meal service - which already in itself has been cut - the salad being an alternative as opposed to be an intermediate course - and in addition due to the cost savings the general quality is down the chute - then please let me have some salt and pepper to give my food some taste...
And whilst being a big dumb Swede - trying to serve Sekt off as Chamapagne - and I am talking during flight and not before take off - because money needs to besaved and thus not opening a new bottle ....:td:
Don`t get me wrong - apps are in and supposedly my life will be much easier and seemsless. I am waiting for years that a bl**dy upgrade request is being kept in the system when the flight is turned over to the check in system from the reservation system - rather then chucked out - and when one gets to check in - and due to status I am marketed that I can get there late - only then to be told that there are xyz other people in front of me on the waitlist for upgrades - despite having put in the request ages ago.
Get the simple things right....

Particularly one that would let me check in for a flight without having to remember my booking code.

This was one of the feedbacks we also got in the FT workshop at the Mega Do, that it should be possible to show - ideally - the nicks used in each community in case users use different handles. (Sorry AHN, that the database doesn't accept three letter nicks as it seems - hopefully we can change it in a next version)
The filtering/sorting options are in general something we need to improve everywhere in the app, not only in the scout around but especially in the public message inbox. You are definitely right! ^

I see your point and can understand you. Therefore I would like to get your FT feedback as the most heavy frequent flyers first before we develop something and spend money which should be used better elsewhere.
At the same time rough economic times shouldn't keep us away from thinking about innovations or things which could help everybody while traveling. I know, sometimes this sounds like doing already the second step before the first or before doing the basics right, but I can only influence my work what I try to do as positively and effective as possible - and hopefully with your help what is why I'm here and trying to go a new way.
Therefore my hope is to get a rough idea of the FTers who are using the app, if the basic idea of the app is right and worth to go on (i. e. that you can meet easily and ask spontaneously your fellows from the same community as you are for tips or maybe also for urgent help).
If this is something which really helps and people will use it, then we can see if we find an economic model which helps everybody, e.g. we could check with Miles & More partners if this environment would be interesting to place ads or mileage promos which we could use to refund the app while the user shouldn't be - ideally - annoyed by it and maybe say at the same time, "yes it's worth it" (or maybe he doesn't want any ads and he even would be willing to pay for it?).
That's why we also thought about charging for the app maybe but feedback of the FT workshop was that many expected we should give for free. But as I said, it's an open process. As you can imagine, I also don't want to be responsible that people don't get any more salt & pepper during their flights - as probably nobody does decide something like that easily I assume - I nevertheless have the hope that we can still create something helpful with your FT input and find a model to finance it at the same time. This is something were we don't wont to lose money and also not something where we try to establish new charges.
I don't know yet, what the ideal way will be but I'm confident that the chances are good to find a way - especially with your help here - where everybody benefits from when we get the basic idea right together.
That's why I wish to work with you here together instead of doing a market research which might tell me easier what I would wish to hear... ;)
No, for real, I really appreciate and prefer your frank, open feedback because I experienced it so far always as helpful and people didn't want to offend, but to help with their true feelings and personal perspective how they see things.

At the workshop we where even discussing if we should give miles to very helpful members or answers!!! :)
But not all of you thought it would be a good idea because they were afraid the quality of the answers could experience inflation... @:-)

I just added two underscores to my nick to make it work, but I am happy to hear that M&M_App_Team is working on this. As it is, Rambuster, you are one of the few FTers I have recognized when trying the app, since you have the same nick.
I'll be interested to see how this works out. This kind of app is really all about the people who use it.

Welcome to the forum, I hope the app develops nicely. And I support an Android app (after the functionality is stabilized)
I've just played with the app for a few minutes. I was surprised that I have to show my real name, I thought my username would suffice. I think it's silly that I'd have to alter my name in order to keep more privacy.
It would be nice if the app could pull reservation data, if you want people to share their travel plans, and generally more of the features on the M&M website. Right now it seemed to me that the attempt is to create a social app based on M&M userbase without many M&M features.
I checked the features, and other than the social networking side of it I couldn't find many uses. For social networking I would join a M&M group on facebook (the only lacking aspect would be proximity). I shall return as a user when a little more privacy options are added to the app.
I don't mean to stir things up, and I'm not being negative about it. I think it's great that this is in development, and I'm just trying to provide my feedback to the dev team. I believe this early in the project it's also important to emphasize users' wishes for the feature set.

I guess it boils down to the fact that the app needs lots more registered users. Then the probability of meeting up with someone at the same location (airport, lounge, etc) is much higher. It will be good to see a Crackberry version as this will widen the userbase considerably.

So basically, the value you see is: nick + filtering by group + location = possibility of meeting. That was what I thought too, but I thought that I might have missed something. :)
How do the bits with messaging, twitter and polls tie into this? Maybe it should be possible to sort messages by distance and not just by time, so you can see messages from people near you? Selecting twitter now seems to give one side of a conversation in the US, not very helpful in Europe.

I am of the same opinion.
LH is permanently cutting down service levels and quality. Furthermore there is something like an inflation of FTL and SEN members, with current status match promotions, "Exchange award against status miles" and things like Lounge Dragon saying "Everyone without questions just go into the lounge"....
On the other hand money is being spend for marketing a product, which itself is becoming worse and worse.
Would I be living in an other country, I would move to an other carrier. And even if Air Berlin will improve just a little bit concerning German destinations, I would change from my current point of view.
Service level is falling and falling. When I was younger, SEN was something special and SEN lounge was really exclusive. Even flying business class on Lufthansa was something I only dreamed of.
Now I buy C tickets with my own private money, but I am handled so bad that I dont feel well any more. Only F would be an alternative, but even there I have experience flight attendends sitting in the seats, kissing passengers which were upgraded (obvious situation!?), talking all the time,.....
Once I was rebooked from LH to SQ for SIN-FRA in business. Can you imagine, it was like heaven on earth (or on plane, better to say). Friendly crew, nice food, great entertainment system, flat bed, ..............
Whats up with Lufthansa? They are going into the wrong direction. No more check in counters for Eco pax, sometimes waiting 10 minutes at First Class check in in FRA - why would one use this carrier if there are alternatives?
I want to book tickets in Eco for my grand parents, but they normally never fly. So they are not experienced. I can not imagine them being able to use "Quick check in" machines. And this is for sure not what they have in mind if they book a flight ticket for many hundreds of Euros. So how will LH improve load factors and increase earnings??? Even these people will start using Air Berlin etc. because there is not difference, they will maybe even be better....
I have been one of the most loyal customers - about 300.000 HON miles, only on LH and LX - 0 (zero) miles on other carriers for 3 years... Just in hope for a better situation.
I hoped there would be ways out of it, but it seems LH doesnt get it. Money is spend for some "trendy" things like iphone apps (I dont have an iphone), to collect more and more data about users (the great thing for LH is that they will also see all your data about non *-carrier flights and full profiling of movements will be possible!!). In my eyes a very dangerous situation to play all this information into LH's hands - it will for sure not improve our situation as LH customers, who value service and quality for our money.
If they see that we are anyway not able to use other carriers on our routes, why should they improve service? Why cant they cut down quality?
All of you FT users should think about the danger of giving all this data to LH....
You will for sure not get any more targeted promotion for a route where you dont use an other carrier anyway, now that LH can access all this data...
Guys, use ba97 or whatever, it supplies the same but you will not support LH in wasting money for stuff like that, which will be cut in even worse movies on longhaul, and nothing to eat in SEN lounges, which are like a waiting hall at FRA main train station currently.
LH is for sure not doing all this because they are a "charity organization". They want to collect data to being able to decrease spendings on other areas.

I thought SEN is like a guarantee, and being SEN means long guarantee, which would in your opinion mean high quality!? In this case, it does not hold true for LH and therefore would be an indication for low quality, is this from your point of view the valid result?

No, no... Sorry about the confusion, nothing to do with "SEN guaranteeing" something, like "seat blocking" or any other myth...
My point was that the lower the quality of a basic product (intentionally) becomes over the years, the higher the need to be supported by other products that come bundled with the original deteriorating basic product (see iPhone apps, etc.) in order to keep pushing its sales.
Warranties could be viewed as bundled goods. However, in the case of "bad" products, the strategy of bundling them with a long warranty may prove to be a very expensive marketing tool for the company. OTOH, it is very cheap when you're sure that your basic product is of high quality.
Your statement that I made a comment on was "how come LH spends money on marketing a product "which itself is becoming worse and worse". According to the above, this is not crazy. It eventually depends in their vantage point, which apparently is different than ours. The more it worsens, the higher the need to be supported by marketing...

In any case i like it and it's funny to see who is near u, maybe when u must pass several hours in some lounge u can met somebody and the time passed faster.

The app seems to crash a lot when you try to refresh (aktualisieren). Then it simply freezes.
To comment on the valid points raised by tcswede and SebFra:
If now LH is even cutting the longhaul C class salad and making this an alternative choice, then clearly we need to cut the iPhone App immediately.
I'd rather have proper inflight service than trendy internet stuff.
I haven't noticed this yet, probably due to too many F segments (15 out of 14 upgrade requests to F cleared this year :D), but I have already booked another 15 segments in longhaul C for next couple of months and I will be pretty upset if this nickel and diming continues or gets worse.
If so, I might as well switch to TG as soon as possible. With a bit of negotiation they offer F class FRA-BKK-FRA for about 3k.
(note to self: fix an appointment with TG sales in FRA and BKK).
Why worry about upgrades and sometimes dodgy F service ("Sorry your F seat doesn't recline, but what can we do?" ....purser shrugging sholders) if I can get a proper F ticket from the start, without having to pray for upgrades to clear.

I am with tcswede and SebFra as well. I can't comment on longhaul BIZ either for 2009, since luckily all my upgrade requests cleared in 2009. But even the F service went down IMHO. Very little menu highlights this year and the del Monego selection is going more and more pathetic each year.
You are obviously right to mention all the other "enhancements", aka soft perks, that disappeared and my biggest blame with LH is still the sudden death of PPB a good year ago, when the points were just 25% of their prior value from one day to the other.
I have that app installed as well (although not with my FT/VFT nick), but on my wish list as a frequent flyer on high fares in premium cabins are tons of other things, before I would request spending any extra dime into such an application.

I downloaded the app, played around with it and then deleted it from my iPhone right away. I think it completely useless. Why would I want to share information with other people where I am and what my status is? I would expect a proper LH application rather than the light one that is out there.
The only advantage the light app has is that you can store your MM # and the password. Other than that it's just a bunch of bookmarks. Look at the iPhone app Sixt is offering. This one is pointing in the right direction, however far from perfect.
But my main point is (joining a few other people's posts):
Don't mess around with stuff like that, spend all your time and efforts to improve your product! Apps like this one are non-sense and I would not want one Cent of my ticket to be used for a project like that. So many products (no matter whether we're talking about airlines, hotels, rental car companies, etc. etc. etc.) are deteriorating and my impression is that Lufthansa's is about to join the saving-battle, too.
If I remember one of my MBA classes correctly Porter mentioned that there are two ways to gain/maintain competitive advantage:
While everybody else is juming on the cost train it could be a viable option to consider a product differentiation strategy, too. I completely agree, you have to earn money, otherwise you cannot spend it, but I am looking at this from my very personal travelling perspective:
I am (compared to some other people here) a lowly SEN with about 120 flights per year and roughly 160K in status miles, plus 1K on UA, but I am moving my business away from them because they piss me off. Just looking at German domestic flights - what does AB (as mentioned in another thread: a.k.a. the red plague) give you for your money?
- you get a snack
- you get a drink
- you get free magazines
O.k., no lounge access but still. If I just remember that in 2009 there were about 2-3 LH flights where I didn't get any service at all!!! Despite the fact that I am SEN and flying on YRTFLEX tickets. C'mon, gimme a break!!!!
Please LH stick to your core competences (or at least what used to be your core competences) and differentiate yourself from all the other bad airlines out there. A great product means happy customers - and guess what - happy customers have a tendency to come back!!! Don't mess around with "Big brother is watching you" like apps and stuff like that. Concentrate on the main issues, get them right and everybody will be happy (hopefully).

^ I am reading this and previous posts and definitely think this app is totally a waste of time and money...I think LH launcher app is kind of OK, but this one is definitely YAWN...
BTW, I will always first visit ft.com to check if someone is at certain airport than fiddle with this app, not to mention ask a question...

I Very little menu highlights this year and the del Monego selection is going more and more pathetic each year.

M&M actually have their own forum running... it took me a while to find but here it is: :)
As far as the functionality of the app goes LH/M&M knows about its shortfalls and will relaunch the app.
In the meantime, use the feedback feature within the app and someone will get in touch with you. If not, send me a PM, I have the contact details of the people behind the scenes.
