This year, I will be at Fri and Sat of the first weekend, and Thur and Fri of the second. While I'm generally quite pleased with how the schedule lays out (I usually don't go for the big acts, but I do look forward to seeing Simon & Garfunkel on the first Sat.), I am disappointed to be missing that first Sunday: Levon Helm, Blind Boys, Terrance Simien, among many others.

http://www.wwltv.com/news/local/Marva-Wright-dies-88932512.htmlI'm crushed. In addition to memories of seeing Marva perform at the old Funky Butt, one of my favorite recent memories was leaving the Acura stage, where a huge crowd stood in the pouring rain to see a mediocre big name performance, and wandering over to the Jazz Tent and seeing an outrageously great Marva Wright performance (backed by John Gros -- I knew as soon as I saw the beat up old Hammond B2 that he'd be on stage! -- and June Yamagishi, among others).

And, THAT is one of those true Jazz Fest experiences!!! ^ :-:

It's hard to say for sure until I see it full size, in person, but the Uncle Lionel poster has the potential to be my favorite ever. My initial reaction when they announced it was, it's a slam dunk. Great artist, deserving subject, visually appealing, and I love the connection to the earlier Tuba Phil poster.
Any Flyertalkers at Fest 2nd weekend, come by the Zulu Diamond Cutters beer booth (facing the Jazz & Heritage Stage) on Friday 4/30, 11-2pm, and ask for Swag. I'll be happy to sell you a cold one!

I think what they are doing with the posters this year is incredible. I, also, want to see the one done by Tony Bennett. Of course, I'm sure that there are a lot of people who ask, "Tony who? Louis who?". :D

I can't make it down this year but already planning for next year!
This will be my FIRST Jazz Fest. Any suggestions on when to go (1st or 2nd wkd) and where to stay would be great. Also, should we just get GA tickets? Seems the VIPs are quite expensive.
THANK YOU!

The 2014 bands won't be announced until December or January, and you'll want to have our travel planed before then. The best choice, of course, is to go both weekends :) but if not, it's somewhat of a toss up. 2nd weekend is one day longer (Thursday).
Where to stay - location-wise, best bet is probably the French Quarter, with the Downtown / Central Business District / Convention Center / Warehouse Districts all almost as good. With any of these, you won't need a car, and they are convenient to transit to the fest and evening nightlife. If you have hotel points available, Jazz Fest can be a great time to use them, since cash prices are at a premium. I already have my 2014 points stay reserved.

Good info and this is what I was thinking as well.
How can you book April 2014 already? I thought hotels only went about 12 months out? Any secret to share?
