I will be arriving in ZRH early January and was thinking about renting a car. I checked out Hertz and Priceline, and found the rates rather high (900 CHF for 2 weeks compact). Are there any lower priced options at the airport?

You could look up which car hire operators have offices at ZRH, and then check their websites or look up 'car hire/autovermietung' in the local phone book and work from there.

Make sure your car has a 'vignette' valid for 2010 (required for all motorway use in Switzerland. Might you need snow tyres, because if you do, that will be at an extra charge ....

Swiss motorways are kept clear in winter very efficiently and petrol (gas) is cheaper than in surrounding countries, so it's not all bad news.

These companies have offices in the airport:

The mentioned vignette should be standard on all cars they hand out and tires are usually the correct type, too.
Price-wise I dont really know. But certainly higher than north america and probably rest of europe.

I generally use Europcar (http://www.europcar.com) because every time I compare prices they turn out to be cheaper than Hertz, Avis or Sixt (the other big ones in Europe).

And to get a lower price in Zurich, try these:

If you are flying in on Swiss I think you can get lower rates. Try booking the car from the Swiss website (http://www.swiss.com).
Consider renting from one of the many city locations, it will be cheaper. (You do not need the car to leave the airport, take the train.) I have rented in the past from a branch in the Oerlikon area (I think it was the one at Hagenholzstrasse). But you’ll have less flexibility with the opening hours. When leaving, you can drop the car off at the airport.
