The Phoenix-based chain, the world's largest by locations under one brand name, is weighing a controversial plan to erase traveler confusion and boost bookings and revenue.

Executives have proposed creating three tiers of Best Westerns based on their design and amenities to give travelers a better idea of what to expect at its 2,300 independently owned hotels in the United States and Canada.

No decisions have been made on the names, but early talk centers on Best Western, Best Western Plus and Best Western Premier. All will be subject to the same Best Western service and quality standards and fees. Best Western Premier is already used in a two-tier system in Europe and Asia.

Makes sense - at the moment there is little differentiation between the very trendy Best Western President in Manhattan and the regular Best Western motels (where a recent reviewer on TripAdvisor complained about the lack of a view - its a motel !!!!)

The Best Western President in Manhattan already uses the classification of Best Western Premier

I can see this change boosting nights at all three levels. ^^^ There is a huge gulf between the lowliest and most elegant BW.
