Would like to add a driver at check-out who isn't going to be there. Can I just show them a copy of his driver's license?

I'm not sure, but for liability reasons, they might require the other driver in person (in case he needs to sign something).

Anyone else know?

If the other driver has the same address as you (on driver's licenses), you don't have to officially add since you're Emerald Club (or above).

If you are renting on a corporate rate for work, work associates who work for your company do not need to be added either.

But I don't know the precise answer to your question but couldn't hurt to have that copy though.

I am positive a good customer service agent will work with OP to make his/her rental experience better :)

If a driver's license is needed, a photocopy will almost definitely not work.

Back in July, I was supposed to drop a car off at BWI and pick a new one up with a different contract. (The one I was picking up was for a one-day, one-way award rental.) I was staying about half an hour away from BWI and was heading into DC to meet some friends for lunch. I was going to be driving right past BWI, so I was going to swap out the cars after lunch. At lunch, I realized that I had left my wallet. I spent most of the hour drive from DC to BWI talking to the Emerald Club, customer service, the BWI station, and the station manager. No dice. They made it very clear that a copy (I had my wife email me a photo of my license) would not be allowed. I had to drive a half hour past BWI, pick up my wallet, and come back. It was totally my fault, so I wasn't upset with them, but it was still frustrating.

AS peteropny mentioned if the other driver is a co worker or immediate family member, there would be no problem (in fact, they wont be added to the actual rental, they are authorized as per the terms of the rental agreement). If it isnt one of the above, then the additional driver would have to be present with their license. Exceptions have been made where the additional driver isnt there but you have their actual license with you. In rare cases, a photocopy of the additonal driver licence been accepted, but generally they will not add the driver unless they are there with their license.

in the last month at Alamo I have added an additional driver at the time of rental and a few days later. At the time of rental a signature was required. When done later nothing was signed so I suspect a friendly agent could have dealt with a photocopy if they wanted to.

Generally a photocopy cannot be taken as it isn't proof that the actual lic is still in That driver's possession. What if the copy is just something they hung on to and their real lic has been suspended? That would mean an illegal driver is being added onto a contract.

Since Most states require that you have an ACTUAL DL in your possession to drive a car and we can't call every DMV/MVD of every state to verify validity, you really need to bring your DL with you at time of rental and have your Ad Dr with you at time of rental. Both drivers must sign the contract even if the state you are renting in has no fee for the Ad Dr. or the Discount rate you are using says you get one addl drvr for free. (with the exceptions already stated in prior posts)

It comes down to legal liability issues...and they vary from State to State.

About once a year, I have a situation where the other driver is arriving a day after me. Since he's flying in, I'm at the airport anyway so it's not a big deal to go back to the counter and get him added.

In cases where you're picking up your additional driver along the way, it would be nice if there was a way for the additional driver to stop in at another location and get the license verified and added to the record in advance. With all the Enterprise locations now, one would think that this is conceptually simple, although the information technology issues are obviously complex.
