I would like to do the following trip, all in C:

ZRH-VIE
VIE-IAD

-- 5 day stopover in IAD --

IAD-IAH
IAH-SJD

-- 5 day stay in SJD ---

SJD-LAX
LAX-ZRH

Am I correct that this is basically a ZRH-SJD round-trip with a stopover, and can be ticketed for the Z1-Z3 price of 37500 miles + GBP 210 + taxes per ticket?

I would say that should be fine as a Z1-Z3. I've done worse, but you might have to accept it will take more than one call.

Any reason you're going via VIE? (just wondering if you've considering that a few UA routings to IAD have their new J). And make sure you get any two class US flights in F.

No availability on the direct route, plus an aversion to American airlines in general. They may have upgraded their in-flight product, but unless they've upgraded their service as well, I'll give United a miss.

Re: two-class domestic flights in F -- I was under the impression that this was one of the downsides of the programme. You earn at F-rates for domestic F (3.0 x base miles) but you also have to burn at F-rates. No?

If you're just flying JFK-MIA in F, yes you'd have to pay 3x. But if the main flight is J across the Atlantic, you can book two-class domestics (and maybe to SJD?) in F.

My J award routing was:
BGI-CLT US F
*CLT-DCA ground/stop
DCA-YOW AC Y (single class)
YOW-YHZ-LHR AC J

Arguably you can put this down to the longest segment rule (I think LHR-BKK J, BKK-HKG F has been booked as a J award before).
