Any recommendations for a hotel in Munich?

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn - MUNICH CITY CENTRE several times - always on a 241 rate - & find it to be good value.

The hotel is modern & quite stylish (although the building is pretty ugly) - we thought the restaurant was pretty good too.

The train from the airport is dead easy - so we saved some money which we needed later - as Munich seemed not the least expensive German city we visited.

It is remarkably easy to get to (even as a stupid Englishman like myself with poor German) being practically above the Rosenheimer Platz - S-Bahn.

It's just a couple of stops away the Marienplatz & the Deutsches Museum is really close too.

We had a family room the last time & took our daughter on the Dachau Concentration Camp which is well worth a visit.

Munich needs an IC.

Sofitel is a good choice (design hotel in a historical building)

Agree HI City Centre is your best ICH choice. Good location and you can walk to the city centre and a great science museum in the river valley. Good supermarket in the underground tunnel to the S-bahn if you need drink and food, though the minibar is free (juices, water, beer, soda but no hard stuff).

Stayed at HI Munich (which means North) some time ago. Rates are very fair and it's refurbished.

HI City Center is fine aiming for 4*-standard.
If you are aiming for 5*- satandard go with Sofitel, Le Meridien, Bayerischer Hof or (more pricey but most wonderful) "Vier Jahreszeiten"-Kempinski.

+1. However, don't be fooled by its name. It's not strictly in the city centre, you'll have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to there. However, the undeground station below is just perfect for moving around, and for getting to/from the airport.

Ask for a city view room. From the window you'll get a glimpse of the must-sees of Munich, like a postcard.
