JAL Mileage Bank - SYD-LHR J Class on JAL

Hi there JAL'ers
Newby to JAL forum so have a few questions about this service & route. JL have the cheapest OW J from SYD-LHR so of course I'm looking at it seriously. AY have good fares but they mostly route via BKK on an MD11-not very enticing.
1. Any frequent users of this route with comments of seats service etc?
2. Will OW miles and status credits be awarded for even the cheapest J fare?
3. Does JL offer a hotel room for J pax on the 18 hr stopover in Tokyo?
4. I note that one choice of flight has an F Class Solo seat service between NRT and LHR.....is there a mixed fare from SYD or am I better off trying for a paid airport upgrade at check-in -cheaper to do that?
Sorry for the questions. I found an entry on this routing but dated back to 2001:D
Thanks in advance for help here.

1. Don't know. Check what's online on their website.
2. Yes
3. Should be. Ask JL or your TA.
4. No mixed fare. Its either C or F. I wouldn't dare ask for paid upgrade cos your fare will be recalculates as F all the way through - full F by the way, not the discounted fare you fare.

Both SYD-NRT and NRT-LHR routes have JAL Shell Flat seats (http://www.jal.co.jp/en/inflight/inter/executive/c_seat/index1.html).
SYD-NRT seat map (W32 before Dec 1, then W51 when JAL introduces PY on SYD route)

NRT-LHR seat map (W73)

Well it would be helpful if you could provide specific questions regarding the seats/service

Just basics.....seats sleepable in, food J class quality..transits easy..service attentive etc.....tips, advice . Im interested because their J fares are so cheap compared to QF or BA-wondering also if anyone has compared. I'm guessing there's not enough difference to justify the QF BA J fare SYD-LHR-SYD.

I don't know much about the SYD-NRT leg, but I can give you some NRT-LHR info as I flew JL401 in late october.
Lounge: J pax will be eligible for the Sakura Lounges either at the Main Terminal or Satellite Concourse. Always pick the Main Terminal lounge. If you have time, prebook a massage or head to the 2nd floor of the lounge and enjoy the food there.
Seat: As JalPak mentioned, the seat is Shell Flat Seat, horizontally reclining to about 170degrees. It is sleepable but pick the bulkhead whenever possible. Seats arranged in 2-3-2, remember to pick the 2's on the left or right side. Entertainment system is AVOD (don't flip the channels, just enter the Interactive Magic AVOD menu directly)
Service: NRT-LHR J cabin has at least one English-speaking Caucasian crewmember adopting Japanese service etiquette, so there is absolutely no language barriers. They kneel down in front of you when they speak. Service is highly attentive, you will find constant patrols by FAs looking out for service requests even at sleeping time. The bathrooms are cleaned frequently and are spotless. JL does not have an amenity kit but they will hand out personal care items after takeoff.
Meals: If you're a fan of Japanese food, request the Japanese Maebaki course, you will not be disappointed as I find ex-NRT catering to be one of the best in the world, and leave room for the inflight snacks and noodles.
Miles: All revenue biz class tickets earn full business class miles on OW partners. If you're a JAL Mileage Bank member, remember to take advantage of the Double Miles promo (eligible for Asia + Aus + NZ):

SSW 207 thanks for the great post. Sounds like JAL is a good experience airline.
QF32 look forward to hearing your thoughts moreso as a QF FF.
