Dumb question...

When flying LAX-LHR-LAX with NZ is it correct to say that the LAX-LHR segment feels like an overnight, while the LHR-LAX does not?

Booking travel for a buddy... and trying to work out which legs to upgrade. The Transpacs seem most important from a comfort perspective... and he doesn't have enough A$/certs to try for upgrades on all 4 segments.... (He's NZ Gold)

If (for example) the LHR-LAX is more of a day flight then I'll use my A$ to try to bump him up to Y+ on that one and he can concentrate on the others... Is that a sensible plan or ????

Thanks in advance folks!:D

Not a dumb question at all....

Think of flying NZ6 AKL LAX in summer....an hour or so of daylight then night then a few hours in the morning.

LHR LAX is 90% daylight. It has to be one of my favourite NZ flights as the scenery can be superb, flying over Greenland and Canada.

A very sensible plan getting your buddy an upgrade to PE.

Excellent!

Thanks a lot for that.... when one looks at departure/arrival times it doesn't really help with such questions... I am easily confused by time zone changes I must admit... embarrasing for an old Navy man eh? :D

He's an "old Mate" so I'm happy to help out... but he should manage the "more important" segment upgrades on his own...

That DOES sound like a nice flight... ah well.. I'll be waiting until 2011 for that one... I'll be on my way home from Poland that time....^

(Next year is just USA trips.. "as usual")

It's easy if you can remember that the vast majority of flights from the US to Europe are night flights. There are a handful of daytime flights from JFK, ORD and I think IAD may have one or two - they depart at 7am or 8am and arrive in London around 9pm. There may still be a daytime flight to CDG as well but I think that was canceled.

And as far as I know, every commercial passenger flight from Europe to the US occurs in daylight, most of them in 100% daylight.

You're right on this. Window seat is a must. With the old business seats this was a flight I enjoyed, but the new BP seats make it a bit harder to get a good view

LHR-LAX is 11 hours gate-to-gate. You may be on board closer to 12 hours with advance boarding and airport delays. I'd say business class is quite important for that flight, by whatever means available.

With PE pricing for the dates he needs in March/April down to AUD$2700 BNE-LAX vv I think we'll book that and add the LAX-LHR vv on as a separate ticket (having a stopover in LAX each way anyway).. that is available for around USD$780 at presesent...

Will make upgrades "easier".....

Don't think I've seen PE pricing at that level for quite a while???
