US Airways Dividend Miles - Cleaning crews are off today? - rant

On 1433 PIT-CLT this morning, the FA made an announcement that as it is Wednesday, the cleaning crews would be off and we needed to be extra diligent about passing trash to the FA's. I'm getting to the point of calling BS on this cleaning stuff. Is my low fare now including trash duty? Am I the only one that hates this?

You sure the FA wasn't kidding? Maybe s/he was just being creative in getting folks to pass their trash into the middle.

I am sorry but since when have the cleaning crews ever been on the clock?
I am sure it was just a joke referencing this.

I understand your concern... BUT...
My <Rant> ON...
WHY.. I mean WHY do SO many people seem to be trying to leave the biggest possible mess they can in their seat and adjacent areas?
God... what do these peoples HOUSES look like?
Is it really so hard to NOT leave all sorts of trash all over the place? How do they produce so much of it? And why does it have to go onto the floor?
I can safely say that any seat I have been in could be "turned around" in seconds... If I get a headset then the plastic bag it came in becomes the trash receptacle for anything else....
I just don't inderstand how so many folks can be so messy.....
RANT OFF....;)

It really got worse once airlines started charging for food, and people were therefore encouraged to bring meals on board. Some people find a way of selecting the sloppiest food possible to bring on board.

If there were any trash receptacles on the plane (other than the lavs) I'd use them. And the tiny one next to row 22 on the A321 doesnt count. That thing gets filled up in seconds, and god forbid any of the F/A's empty it throughout the flight, so then people pile stuff on the lid, and then it overflows, and no one cares.

To be very clear - this was not said in a joking manner. Three of us (two chairman one platinum) all walked off the plane commenting about the announcement. This was very clearly stated as the passengers needed to do extra work since cleaning crews were off.

This makes no sense as I have heard of no shortages. The f/a's are in charge of cleaning up the a/c on that flt with cleaners just taking out the trash and checking the lavs. What a stupid crew you had or they were really pulling one on you guys.

The FA was joking -- no matter what "tone" it was expressed in. They were just trying to get people to give them their trash, rather than leave it in the seat pockets, seats, floor area, etc.

So why not take the trash off of the plane and drop it in a trash can in the airport?

What I find funny is no matter how many times you go up and down the aisle with a trash bag or make various announcements, some bozo will still leave their pile of crap in their seat. It just pure laziness and defiance.

Its all about convenience. If you make something convenient, people will do it. If its inconvenient, it won't happen.
I never recycled until we had curbside pickup. For years, I could have brought my newspaper and bottles to the recycling center at the dump. I didn't (and no one else did either) because it wasn't convenient.

Weren't cleaning crews abolished years ago in Wave 1 of the cutbacks? FA's had cabin cleaning added to their scope of duties. That's why you see the radical increase in "please help us keep the cabin clean" and other strategies to get pax to self-clean as much as possible - they now need to clean up what's left.

Ummm...exactly what is the "extra work" that you as a passenger have to do? Is it picking up and handing the "trash" you made on the floor or the "garbage" you had in the seatback pocket that needs to be collected?
I don't know what the big deal is here?

I don't get the big deal in picking up after yourself. I do it as common courtesy and respect for the next person in my seat / area. However it kills me how dirty some of the aircraft can be. I don't mean random trash but spilled things, crumbs from snacks, and other pure grime. I know they have to do quick turns at times but can't they go through and wipe up when needed? I'm usually always in First too - and I can't tell you how often I have crumbs and filth in my seat and around the armrest and beverage tray.
