This link, posted elsewhere, is a really well put together presentation about competition at DCA. What's very interesting are the quotes and graphs around the 11-12 minute mark (volume necessary), regarding Alaska's DCA route being among the most profitable, by rate of return, in the country and world. If you're not interested in the other carriers at DCA, it's worth just skipping ahead.

The whole presentation is great if you're into revenue management.

I was just thinking about this morning. We in the 10th congressional district have a new congressman to take over Ellen Tausher's spot and he plans on getting on the transportation committee. I thought it would be nice if Alaska could start service from SFO-DCA since no airline has that direct service from SFO. Maybe IAD but with so many congressional districts here in the Bay Area, you would think those congressmen would love to have a direct flight instead of having to fly into Dulles.

What a silly statistic that they harp on of AS making the most money/departure at DCA.

Well DUH;
a) Alaska's average stage length (SEA,LAX) out of DCA is thousands of miles, and all the other airlines are flying 1/3 of that
b) Alaska operate comparitively larger aircraft (all 737) vs US Air/American who are flying some Regional stuff in there.

It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to point out that one aircraft flying a 5 hour route is going to
