I just got the email from HH about the sweepstakes for "Up in the Air" - a movie that many of us are likley to relate to. While I know the odds of getting anything from it are slim I'm curious - does anyone know if Hilton family stays get entries or just stays at mainline Hiltons? It looks like just mainline but was curious as the material doesn't really come out and say it.

I wondered the same thing. However, using the booking area of the promo page, only Hilton hotels came up for the area searched. There are lots Hilton family hotels there but they were not listed. SO based on that, I assumed it was Hilton only.
Andrea, can you clarify?

Yes, the sweepstakes is for Hilton hotels only. Check out the trailer, the movie looks good, especially for you frequent travelers.

No, you can book any package, promotion, or offer, as long as it’s done through hilton.com. By booking you will get an entry into both the Grand Prize drawing and prize-of-the-week drawing.
Good luck,

By the time the winner receives 1 million HH points, they'll only be worth around 700,000 points.
Did you notice how Hilton is not publicizing the devaluation on their web site, emails etc?
Pretty low key.
Not least since there aren't any "enhancements".

I do not see how you can register for this promotion without booking a room. Can someone please explain how to register on-line for this or is this going to be one of those cases where you have to mail in a 3 X 5 card to register for the promo If you are not booking.

No on line registration. You must use snail mail.
From the web link in post #1 look at the lower right-hand corner. There's a link reading "Click Here For Rules". It brings up a pop-up. The first paragraph reads:
TO ENTER: There are two (2) ways to enter: 1) Book any stay at a Hilton hotel on www.Hilton.com (the "Website") any time during the Promotion Period and you will receive one entry into the Sweepstakes (a "Book Entry"), 2) You may enter without a stay by sending your hand-printed name, address and phone number on 3” x 5” paper to Hilton “Up In The Air” Sweepstakes Alternate Entry, P.O. Box 8600, Westport, CT 06888 (a "Mail-In Entry"). All Mail-in Entries must be postmarked by 01/11/10 and received by 01/18/10. Limit one (1) entry per person/e-mail address during each week of the Promotion Period regardless of the method of entry, for a total of ten (10) entries per person/email address during the Promotion Period, regardless of the method of entry. For purposes of this Sweepstakes and these Official Rules, the term “week” is understood to mean Tuesday – Monday. Multiple entries will be disqualified.

This gets brought up over and over and over (often in the whiniest possible tone). I believe there are LEGAL reasons why these kinds of sweepstakes are limited in this manner. I.e., Hilton's legal department has to make sure they comply with the laws of each country (& jurisdictions within each country, such as the states of the U.S.) regarding contests/sweepstakes.
I'm sure it isn't just a matter of Hilton sort of casually "changing its mind" and saying, "Hey, wait a minute! Let's just include another ~199 countries in the mix! No problem!!!
I never understand why people get so offended and upset over these types of things, as if they are being "left out" and personally slighted.
And I'm sure someone's post is going to rant about how they are going to immediately cancel all their bookings, burn their HHonors points, and stomp off to another program just to get "revenge."

On the contrary, I received an e-mail on October 21, announcing the change in award levels. (I am subscribed to the HHonors Special Offers and Announcements e-mail list. Perhaps you aren't?)
Also, they DO have the change in reward levels on their website, under Rewards -> Hotels -> One Free Night.

Wow. I had that same question but was afraid to ask here on FT because, well, you know. I called HH and asked that very same question. After a little while on hold the answer was..... yes. You get entered making the reservation. So I made 5 on line and now I am done. :p Considering how much I feel the program is now devalued (or will be in Jan) I don't see myself going for Diamond again in 2010. Priority Club is working out very well and I can see myself getting more bang for my points with them... even without their branded CC.

I made duplicate bookings of a couple of reservations because I got the same price then canceled the originals. Then I made some other reservations that might or might not pan out before the end of the year.... yes, that's right... that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :p

Actually, you only have one entry. The rules state you are only allowed one entry per week. All five res made this week will only count once. You have to go back each week and make a res.

So, assuming one of us actually wins 1 million HHonors points, what would be the obligation to the Internal Revenue Service? (Yes, AFAIK these are taxable, unlike the ones we earn.)

Good question! HHonors has to set a value on the prize in order to be taxed. 1,000,000 if used carefully can be worth up to 1-2 cents/ point. If used poorly, less than 0.2 cents/pt. Pretty wide range. What monetary value have they set on the points?

Whatever the amount that HH were to arrive at, it can be challenged and the amount added to your taxable income reduced. This is especially true if you were to redeem the points prior to filing your taxes. If you can show what the cost would have been had you purchased the rooms and that cost is less than the amount arbitrarily reported to the IRS as income to your SSN then you can have the amount adjusted. Its been done before.
Of course if you find the redeemed value was much higher... just keep your mouth shut and pay the taxes on the arbitrary amount.

I made a reservation through the contest link but haven't received any kind of notification that I've got an entry in the contest? Is there some way to tell that you've made a qualifying entry?
Also, if you make a reservation (e.g. this week) but cancel it before the sweepstakes expire, does it still count as a qualifying entry for the grand prize?

What happens if you cancel your booking? From what you guys are saying here you are still eligible to win the 1,000,000 HH points right?
And regarding the weekly prizes do I have to make the booking dates on that specific week or a future booking is acceptable?
In other words, if I made a booking today for 2 weeks from now, which draw will I be included for? This week or the 2 weeks from now?

If you look at the rules they list the estimated retail value of the prizes.
200,000 points is worth $2,000 so they are valuing each point at .01.

Hi could you please answer my following questions:
1- If I am make a booking today for the weekend of the 13th Nov will this booking get me in the Nov 3-9 week or the 9-16 Week?
2- And if I make a booking today for a trip dated in February will this booking be considered an entry for the grand prize?

200,000 points is worth $2,000 so they are valuing each point at .01.
Wow, that's high. I use my points carefully, primarily in very expensive cities e.g., London, Rome, but most of the time I can't hit the 1ct/1 pt threshold. It was hard to hit that prior to the devaluation. But with the devaluation, how they put such a high value on their points?!

What I understood from this statement is not the announcement (way of communication) with the winner. I thought this is for organizations required list of winners.
My question was about how will Hilton contact the winner? Email, mail, phone, or will something appear on his HH profile..etc and if they will be doing an announcement on it. Apparently the second part of the question is that they won't. And I am guessing the winner will know privately.

Sorry. I totally mis-read your post. Mea culpa. I thought you were asking how to find out who won. Again, my mistake. :o I see your question has to do with the marketing of winner. I would guess that only a HH insider would be able to answer this. And that HH insider would need to be in the marketing department of HH and not customer service per se. I would also guess that a call to HH (up to a supervisor) might get an answer to your question. The only other avenue I would choose is to contact HH through the web site

Has anyone else NOT received confirmations of entry?
Andrea, is everyone getting confirmations and can they back enter me since I have the confirmations and dates the res were made? I obviously made the entries correctly and it appears there is problem with the Hilton system recording the entry properly. It would not be fair not to get an entry because of a PROBLEM with the HILTON system!

BTW, for those making multiple reservations thinking it will increase their odds of winning - it's ONE ENTRY PER WEEK FOR A TOTAL OF 10 ENTRIES.
Yes I have.
To be eligible you must be a US or Canada resident not in Quebec. And What I am guessing HH are checking your primary address and if you are not in either countries your entry won't count.
The entry of week 1 was confirmed on Nov 12th. So if this is going to be the rule your weekly entry mostly will get confirmed on Thursday of the following week.
You are only allowed one entry per week. I am assuming when you said you have three entries is that you have placed an entry every week (since we are in the 3rd week of the competition now). If so, and you haven't received any confirmation by email (checked your bulk) and you are residing in USA or Canada then call HHonors and ask them the reason behind not receiving your confirmation.
