Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) - Face to fave with a non-rev in the jump seat for 12 hours - acceptable?

Hi,

I am writing on behalf of my partner who flew yesterday FRA-BKK. We are both UA 1K members and *A gold and fly LH infrequently.

Yesterday, he asked and was given an emergency exit aisle seat and was appreciative. Right before boarding a non-revenue employee was seated in the jump seat directly opposite, face to face and knee to knee for the entire 12+ hour flight, making for a very uncomfortable trip.

Is this common practice on LH? Does this sound acceptable, or is it even allowed?

I would appreciate any comments on how to address this with LH.

Many thanks!
:)

Sounds very strange indeed !
Looks like they were once again completely oversold...
I'd write to LH asking for an explanation?

Where exactly was that seat? Which row and Y, C or F?

I don't think that there are any crew seats on a LH 744 that close to the passenger that it would be "knee to knee" and uncomfortable.

in C and F i think its impossible, in Y both pax would have to be extremely tall...

Maybe not knee to knee but even in F I would find it uncomfortable if someone would be looking at me all the time. If I'd like such a thing I'd fly BA.

In my memory there is a decent amount of space between the exit row and the jumpseat and while it may be irritating to have somebody staring at you, on a nightflight I wouldn't mind too much.

Think of it that way: This seat certainly still was preferable to about 300 others on the same flight ^

(And to put things into perspective: As a *G on UA I got adapted to expect nothing, considering myself happy if not being squeezed into a middle seat)

I will second this opinion, although I have now got used to C and F and do not remember how much space there is...;)

Or C class on the new UA 744 config... That was the ONLY thing my wife and I did not like - people basically facing us all the time...

If that wasn't a strong hint to keep it that way ;) ...

Sounds like something LH would do. My last longhaul in LH Y is a decent while ago but I still remember it vividly. First I was taken away my exit row seat for "someone who needs it for medical reason" and then the last minute - probably by the hands of the same malicious GA - the seatblock was overwritten and an extremely hyperactive child is squeezed next to me who I could not even yell at because neither it nor its mother did speak any language I can express myself in :( .

So I guess your partner was just really lucky.

If in Y tell him to stop griping - he was more comfortable than most others on this flight. Sorry he gets no sympathy from me.

He was asked before and agreed about the "emergency seat" right? So where is the problem?

I had this once from BKK on KLM in C and I told them it wasn't acceptable - they offloaded the nonrev.

If you are paying a premium fare it is not OK in my book and the crew should have realized this - I'd ask for compensation.

It???

obviously he was unable/unwilling to determine the gender of the child, plus it makes no difference in the scenario described...

I think I would feel compelled to chat with that person . . . after a few minutes of that, the non-rev will wish s/he wasn't on that flight! :D

you could use the person in the jumpseats legs as a footrest or as a table for your laptop

im sure they would get the hint

as to the OP i would think that this is not acceptable even for a LCC let alone a major European airline

I thought that too. Knee to knee with the average LH flying employee doesn't sound like punishment at all. I'd pay for that in many scenarios.

Based on? It's an exit row. With a jump seat mounted in it. I think that having a pax next to you is a bigger intrusion than what the OP's pal experienced.

This situation would entirely depend on just whom LH has decided to park across from me ;)
