Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - cancel within 24 hrs?
Yesterday I have booked a one-way SEA-SFO for coming Sunday, AS308 8:25 for $64 + tax, great deal, just a little less then ideal timing.
Today I found SEA-SLC-SFO on DL/NWA for the same price and almost ideal time. Plus I am NWA GOld (ok, fine, Medallion Gold ) so I thought I could cancel my AS ticket within 24 hrs. Alaskaair.com mentiones that I can have 1 free change until 23:59 today.
However when I click cancel it only offers credit towards future flights, not refund.
Am I looking in the wrong place or Alaska does not offer 24 hour cancellations?
If I do go for credit, will it be full amount?
Thanks!

Thanks!Hmm you should be used to that scam;)...over there at NW land they play the same lame trick. Im not sure if AS socks you with $100 change fee to boot like good ole NW
FWIW I thought AS only allowed 1 change in 24 hours. I didnt know it could be canceled as well unless of course you have full flex or paid F

Correct... AS allows one to 'hold' their ticket, but once you put down the CC info, AS gets the $$$ :p (unless full Y/ F ticket)...
NW does allow the 24 hr cancellation window, but no hold period... so two different systems... then there's DL  :p

They can actually start serving at 6 a.m. in Seattle BR.
Also FYI -- Alaska will fully refund a ticket if you call them within 24 hours, but that's almost to the minute -- I believe pretty much every airline will do that, they have to give you a period of time to catch any potential mistakes.

Are you sure about that? If so, it's not a published policy. Have you had experience with it?
The reason I thought they didn't was because the offered the 24 hour courtesy hold instead, which many other airlines don't do.

There is some 'leeway' after booking in case something went wrong... but not designed to be a way to refund from what I have seen. More so if the wrong date/city pair was booked... based on my own experiences. Of course now you have one change via the internet for free within 24 hours...

As a (former) NW FF this has burned me before:
NW - No hold, but purchase can be fully refunded if cancelled within "1 day" (in quotes because its actually by 11:59pm the next day, which can be up to 48 hours if timed right).
AS - 24 hour hold option available. Once purchased: can apply full value minus change fee to a new flight. If reapplied (not just cancelled) within 24 hours of purchase or you are MVP gold the change fee is waived.

Yep, I like that verbiage. Now a Mileage Plan ticket has more leeway. It can be refunded or changed within the 24 hour period with no change fee.
Once purchased: can apply full value minus change fee to a new flight. In my experience, AS will not let you deduct the change fee from your credit. You apply the credit to the new ticket, but they charge your credit card separately for the $75 change fee - it's a separate transaction.

That is NOT correct - AS will give you a free change, but not a free cancellation.
IME (and YMMV) as an MVPG if you call and ask nicely they will make "an exception" and let you cancel/refund. Of course as an MVPG you can just change to some dummy rez out in the future at the same fare, and then change again when you are ready to book a more expensive flight, but getting the refund is better than letting AS keep your money for that period.

Its much easier than saving old PNRs and calling to redeem credits
