It is shocking. The routes from the far South West to the North of Scotland are principally there for show. People tend to use the train for just a bit of the route. But the point about high rail fares is well made - a combination of Flybe and Megabus could probably get you there for a fraction of the cost, and in a fraction of the time.

But then again, I remember a thread about the very high walk up fare from LHR-AMS (or was it BRU) on here a few weeks ago.

This is old hat. That fare has been in the National Rail fare manual since 2003, although would probably never be issued since it's cheaper to buy an Off-Peak fare for £561. Alternatively you could buy a first class All Line Rover which would give you seven days of unlimited first class travel throughout the UK for £650.

Cool, I never knew this fare existed, that's quite an interesting thing to remember for the future. Wonder if my young persons railcard discount applies! (Probably not as it only works on advance first tickets!)
