I'm flying first and my friend is in business. Would it be possible for him to join me during the meal portion of the flight? Its half empty in first. Could they serve his meal in the first class section?

what's the best approach for getting him in

thanks

I think the rule of thumb is instead of your friend going to First, you should go visit him in business instead ....

others please feel free to correct me if I am wrong

O.T. does the OP talking about AirTran Airways instead of CX ?

Yep, always downgrade, never upgrade. If they let your friend do it then it's a floodgate, so FAs are trained to stop people from "upgrading" during flights, but of course have no issue with people "downgrading" to find their friends and love ones.

This reminds me of a funny story, I once saw a family of 4 traveling and during boarding the dad's boarding pass was "beep beep" and got a Biz upgrade, however, the agent said, "oh sorry sir, you are traveling with family, I will give your seat back", however, the dad quickly said, "no, I want the upgrade" and the agent was shocked. Yep, during the whole HKG-JFK flight he left his wife and 2 children in Y while he sat in J, of course he makes periodic visits to Y.... LOL

No it wouldn't, and quite rightly so.

(And in F there are no set meal times - you eat whatever whenever you want)

Um, he should yield his seat to his wife.

As said above, you should visit your friend in J, not the other way around. Occasionally, SPs may allow a very brief visit (e.g. to get travel documents) by a J passenger to F.
