I will fly from London - Seoul and I can choose within AF and Lufthansa (unfortunately no other options).
In terms of seats and entertainment, which one would you recommend?
Thanks!
P.S. I already asked this question in the LH forum, but I was curious to know if I get the same answer here! :-)

Hi mrwoody,
Is it with AF or KE (Code share) and in C or Y?
I have done the CDG-ICN on KE (AF code share in both Y and C) and is highly recommendable. Y has 33" of leg room on their 744's which is very generous and you do feel the difference from the standard 31"/32" on other EU carriers. The lie flat seats in C are great and if you can get a seat upstairs I would highly recommend these...
The IFE is brilliant both in C and Y with loads of interactive stuff to keep you entertained for many hours.
Haven't done LH or actual AF so can't comment on this...

I agree, the Korean Air flight is infinitely better than anything AF or LH have to offer both in C and Y, plus it's a direct flight.
Although, I've now moved over to *A and am doing the same trip on Asiana, which has a better wine list but you don't get to sit upstairs.

Haven't tried Asiana, but I "agree" that the wine list (drink list in general) is not very good on KE (C or Y). Very tentative FA's but drink wise they (i.e. KE) lack far behind in C even compared to Y on AF birds.
Maybe this is part of the cultural differences, I don't know...

thanks very much for your replies.
They are going to be AF (AF 264/267), economy class.
Any comment on the seats of these flight? thanks!

sorry... one more question. Do you know if I can use Northwest miles to upgrade to business? if so, how many miles would I need?

You can, but you must purchase a full-fare economy ticket to do this

I'll be flying the AF codeshare in Y on KE metal this week, so glad to hear that it will be better than the AF metal. Due to lack of any earnings on KE discounted tickets I had to pay extra for the priviledge of gaining 25% on AF stock:mad:

The KE FA's are out of this world IMO... ^ so you are in for a treat!!!

I don't actually agree that the wine list in C is weak at all - at least on flights between Europe and ICN. A couple of times, I have been offered a fantastic Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru which I can only guess had been mistakenly taken from First class, and the other times, beautiful St Estephe and Chateauneuf du Pape in reds and a Gewurstraminer Grand Cru and a Pouilly Vinzelles in white. Their Champagne, Laurent Perrier, is also better than what we usually get in AF C. I do agree, however, thatthey are not very forthcoming with drinks, you have to ask whenever you want anything. The list changes little, wines between ICN and Oceania are much weaker, and glasses are tiny, but quality wise, I'd rank KE on European routes in C well above AF and LH!
BTW, I agree with everyone - basically, just take Asiana or Korean and you'll be fine, they both offer fantastic service. Asiana C is supposed to be top notch and in Y feels a bit more modern than KE which feels a bit old fashioned. But both airlines are great and service uber-attentionate! I wish KE set the standards for Skyteam as a whole!!!

I flew LHR to TSN via ICN about 6 weeks ago and they had Sancerre and Chablis on the wine list, I was spoilt for choice, although I don't remember the specific producers (sorry Orbitmic - I bow to your superior wine knowledge :).

Great palates like alike! ;) And it's nice to see they have changed the selection a bit as compared to what I had in the past 6 or 7 trips! I like their classic choice, I like it that they offer Kir royal (AF doesn't anymore I believe) and I like it that they offer creme de menthe for digestive (and a very good cognac!)

Thanks for all your replies.
Korean Airline seems to be much more expansive for my flight.
So the only choices that I have are LH and AF (economy class)

it depends on which FFP you are. In average, LH is better in C than AF. I never flew in Y on LH. If you are seeking for miles, LH offers the best for average fares in economy. (100%) AF will give you only 50%. (or 25%)

Depending on the day, these flights are operated by 772 or 77W.
You have to know that the 77W have been reconfigurated in 3-4-3 (one more seat abreast), without any pitch increase, transforming them in sardine cans that are (in my opinion) unbearable, except if the seat near to you is empty.
The 772 Eco cabin will be downgraded similarly, when they roll-in the Premium Eco cabin. But the process is only starting now with flights to JFK, so you probably won't have this for SEL yet.
So double check what plane is planned and if it is a 77W just run away. If it is a 772 there is of course a risk that, due to high loads they change it to a 77W.
I can not comment yet on LH, but, since I have been status matched by them recently, I will fly next week HKG-MUC on a 346, and FRA-HKG on a 744 (deliberate choice to test both planes, not flown LH since nearly 10 years!). So I may have an opinion afterwards (knowing beforehand that for me the best IFE in the world will never replace personal space!).
In any case the LH flight are operated by A343 (via MUC) or A346 (via FRA), with a 2-4-2 config in Eco, better than even the (normal) 3-3-3 of the AF 772 (no double excuse seats, and less noisy inside the cabin). And of course better than 77W sardine cans.

Fair enough... I'm not a great wine drinker, but my spouse is (big time) and there was a very little choice available (2 reds and 2 whites in C) and not once did any of the FA's offer us champagne other than when we had taken our seats :td: Haven't flown AF C intercontinental so can't really compare and what to expect (quite new on the field :p)
This said, I really enjoyed KE and don't care about the wine selection(s) or the lack there of, but as said before the drinks in general are not flowing and I hate using the call button to ask for a bottle of water or a soft dink :(

I think the AF codeshares operated by KE (no need to book KE ticket) should not be much more expensive, but it depends on the dates of course. In my case the KE tickets would actually have been even cheaper, but 0% mileage on FB.

As stated above, I wouls avoid AF in Y,for the (high) risk of getting the 10 abreast seating in 777, which is totally unbearable.
As an aside, I am suprised by some comments here about wines served on KE C. The usual comment is that they are fairly avarage. While asiana is sering superb wines. IMO the best wine list in F & C of any airline, including SQ.

I fly both very often and I can tell you that they are about exactly the same. They both have those terrible slanted seats and the food and service is roughly the same, although as has been noted many times on Flyertalk, on AF it helps if you speak French. ;)
And AF is still the only airline that serves free Champagne in economy.
