I did a search on this topic but couldn't find a conclusive answer so I thought I should start a thread on this.

I booked on an Advance Purchase rate via the IC website, and due to an unexpected change of plans I have to move the date of the stay to a few days later. I contacted the hotel and they said the terms of Advance Purchase state that reservations are not changeable, but they will help me this one time and change it for me.

I went to look at the Advance Purchase terms and only found that the purchase is non-refundable and non-cancellable. It didn't say that I can't change the date. Has anyone had problems changing the date of their Advance Purchase booking?

PS: PC tells me the reservation cannot be viewed online and I have to contact the hotel, hence I couldn't try to change the date by myself.

I had 2 experiences with this issue:

First one thery agree to change the night to another date paying the difference, second one I managed to change within the first 20 minutes after doing the reservation and without problem (seems a grace period).

So, the best thing it's to contact the hotel and try to exchange for another date.

No never, but I have always done it myself online

I have even changed the rate type. I onced booked a non-refundable rate
realized it was wrong rate for the promotion I was after, so I just changed to Advanced Purchase rate and then canceld. Now, in this case they hadn't charged my credit card, if they've already done that this might not work i.e. you might not get a refund.

i've always called the hotel directly--or emailed them, in the case of a hotel in china--and not had a problem changing a date. ^

I had to change a points and cash res yesterday for the HI Kensington forum and the on line booking engine would not let me do it and an orange warning popped up above that the file is not avaialble on line and to call nearest res office which I did. The res agent could not change it and had to go to a supervisor. The supervisor said there is a bug in the system and they are having problems with many points and cash reservations. res was changed and now shows up on my PC site. It is now working normally.

I have managed to change a date by calling the hotel directly, but never a refund.

From everyone's experiences here, it looks like changing the date on an Advance Purchase rate is definitely possible, which means what the hotel told me about it being non-changeable is untrue. Anyways since they let me change it (albeit telling me that I can't change it again) I won't call them out on it this time.

Don't jump to conclusions based on experiences posted here. The hotel did give you the correct information. The hotel is under NO obligation to alter the date of the reservation. The cancellation policy for the Advanced Purchase Rate is clearly stated when you confirm the reservation online.

Some hotels may accommodate the guest and change the date, but are not required to do so.

as long as youre not booking on a holiday, i would say 90% of hotels are willing to let you change. keep the customer happy, especially in this recession =]
