Hyatt Gold Passport - hyatt platinum/diamon guarnteed availability question?

I was loking at hyatts guranteed availability program for its elite members. How does this work exactly?

What if there is a major event in town the sundance film festival, the olympics, etc how can they gurantee availability to every elite member? Has anyone ever called and a hotel wasnt available?

Firstly, while Hyatt may overbook rooms, it does so with a clear formula, minimizing chances of denying confirmed guests, and this applies even during "major events".

In the event Hyatt has to deny a hotel guest a room, it will probably be a guest (not Plat or Diamond) that checks in a bit later and has a cheaper room rate. I am sure that the hotel will know who to bump.

Further, the overwhelming majority of guests (maybe 70-80%) on any given night are "Gold" level (essentially non-elite) guests. This gives a large pool of guests that are not Platinum or Diamond.

The only case I can imagine a hotel denying a Platinum or Diamond is if that member checks in very late, and all the rooms are full. I am sure hotels would work to make sure that they dont deny a diamond or plat...but if they do they'll cover your room at a comparable hotel for free...so all is not lost :)

If no room/suite is available, Diamond/Platinum members will be guaranteed one standard room at Hyatt Hotels for their own personal use when a Hyatt paid reservation is made at least 48/72 hours prior to arrival based on local hotel time and guaranteed with a valid credit card. This guarantee is subject to the hotel's (very expensive) Hyatt Daily Rate and individual hotel reservation requirements, such as length of stay, special packages and meal plans.

Guarantee is not valid during extraordinary room demand (eg New Years Eve at GH New York).
