Hi *.
I am premier with United. I need to fly from Frankfurt to Seoul. Is there any advantage for premier members? (i.e. something like Economy plus)

Also does anyone know about the entertainment on these flights?
Would it be better for me to choose Airfrance?

Thanks!

Welcome to Flyer Talk mrwoody :)

Permit me to answer while other FTers are rolling on the floor. UA doesn't provide economy plus seating to non-UA *G (star alliance gold status) members, so don't expect to be given it from other airlines (although some, like Air NZ, do).

As it happens LH doesn't have better economy seating other than exit row, which you cannot request in advance.

...... just up on my feet again.:D

Now , I take it you are willing to connect somewhere , if so there are many better options than AF IMHO.

why?
I need to fly London - Seoul.
Both Airfrance and Lufthansa offer cheap tickets for that route. I need to choose within these two... which one has better seats? better entertainment?

Thanks!

Welcome to Flyertalk! :)

AFAIK LH uses the Airbus 340-600 for the FRA-ICN route, therefore you´re getting the best LH has to offer in Y:

AVOD, more or less edible food, free drinks and a 2-4-2 configuration

(Their 744s are a kind of very outdated and IMO should be avoided.)

Oh, YEAH! AF is entertaining...

Thanks for all your reply. It seems that everyone here agrees on LH.
Any comment about the seating?

I would avoid the last blocks (especially "center" and aisle) of rows in eco on the A340-600. Otherwise the aircon blows without escape above your head for hours.

Em em ... well given that you limit the choice between Hydra and Charybdis, I would always go with Hydra, yes  .

If you drop the requirement, then I could think of about 5 carriers I'd prefer over LH...

is weero alright? I'm really getting worried, as under normal circumstances he'd have already mentioned LH loves UA elites... :D

Back to the OP:

1. LH: 340-600 on LH on FRA-ICN is ok because there is personal entertainment. LH does not have eco plus.
2. AF: Can't really comment as I have not flown AF longhaul in a long time.

ICN is not really a budget destination, so few options exist. Turkish Airlines (*A) is quite aggressive these days, so it might worth checking out their fares ex LHR, LGW, or FRA/MUC. AFAIK, they very very decent business class fares to the far east.

Thanks for the info! do you know if I can use UA miles to upgrade to business class? If so, how many miles would I need ?

Not sure what equipment AF is using to SEL, but some of their 777 have 10 seats across instead of the usual 9 - which should make it substantially worse than even the least desirable LH seat.

Avoid rows 40 and 41!

You'd need 30K miles and a B or Y class tix from LH - here (http://content.united.com/ual/asset/SAUAAwardChart040709.pdf) ... not the way to go mate!

They do ... but their Y product stinks nonetheless.

But given the choice of LH vs. AF which means narrow seats and CDG ... the choice is purgatory or hell. And easy pick.

10 abreast in an AF 777? For 10+ h on CDG-ICN?
Good lord!
Have to admit: I've never been in AF economy for longhaul, but still... 10 abreast <shudder>.

Back to the topic: Not sure what kind of base eco fare UA requires for an upgrade of a TK flight LHR-IST-ICN, but that would be worth checking out. Lounge in IST is definitely change from the regular *A lounges.

Welcome to FT and the M&M forum, mrwoody!

You are the UA MP member, aren't you so you should know it ;) Check out this page on UAL.com (http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52927,00.html). There is a link to the award chart as well. It should be 30k miles oneway from B or Y booking class. As you mentioned earlier that you consider of flying LH or AF because they a reasonable priced I doubt (or actually I am quite sure) that your flight won't book in B or Y on LH.

Welcome to FT mrwoody!

It seems you have some overblown expectations about what UA status or miles can do for you. About the only benefit you will get from flying LH is that you can accrue UA miles. Just for this reason it makes sense to go for LH over AF.

Flying Y on LH is not a luxurious experience, but you will be just fine.

What about OZ? Doesn't OZ have a FRA-ICN route? (Or LHR-ICN, since the OP has indicated the need for both so I don't know which is true.)

Still *A, still earns UA miles. How does their Y product compare to LH? SeatGuru says 34" pitch on both 747 and 777 aircraft.

And for the love of FT, why limit yourself to only LH or AF? With the abundance of options go LHR-ICN on *A carriers, I say mix and match!

Why to pontificate when the question can be answered straightforwardly? As e.g. our favourite Mod did ;) .

Sure the solution is not nearly as great as the OP might have hoped for though.

Yes OZ 542 and their coach seats are ace!!! 34" pitch, ample legroom, fluffy. Only true complaint I ever had is that IFE is very inconsistent and that a plane which serves Korean food really ought to have air nozzles ;) .

Yes, OZ flies both routes. And I personally would take OZ over LH on this route.
