Hi all

Does the window exit seat on the upper deck have good views or do you have to stretch your neck awkwardly? I have been allocated 13k and was wondering if I should see if I can get the exit seat but would like a good view.

Cheers

I am here to say that unless you like looking at the sky, stars, moon, sun etc; viewing from the upper deck is minimal; it may be worse at the exit.

People choose the U/D for reasons of general privacy and a more intimate atmosphere.

Personally, give me a front row lower deck seat - better views, more storage space for carry on and generally among the first out of the aircraft for customs/immigration.

16K has no view
16A has some semblance of a view

Go with serfty's advice...

Unless you can sit with your head twisted at 90 degrees or more for hours on end, avoid row 16 UD.

Other UD windows are good for star, cloud, sky and limited ground viewing (due to the curvature of the aircraft cabin). Perfectly good and I like it. The down side is the limited room in the overhead bins (large bags won't fit). It is quieter though but you'll get some midnight traffic to the flight deck up and down the aisle which vibrates the seats because of the flimsy cabin floor.

Lower deck has bigger bins and more air vent noise. BUT the window view will be better because you'll be closer to them.

og, I wonder if you could clarify about row 16.
From this pic http://www.airliners.net/photo/Qantas/Boeing-747-438/0552205/L/&sid=9a7ecfb3e8a28fdcb60483c40501e1df it looks like you'd get a good view from the further forward of the two windows, though certainly the closer one means your head's at right angles to the direction of travel.

And willyroo, why is there a difference between 16K and 16A? Could you elaborate please?

edit - embarrassing spelling mistake rectified.

This is an odd seat configuration - one I have yet to experience. Normally, 16 JK has your right shoulder very close to the window immediately behind the exit. If you check the QF 744 seat maps you'll see several configurations for UD seats (at least this was the case recently)

The seats in the photo are staggered - look at the QF seat diagram

I think the photo was taken while the Skybeds were being installed, with an additional row of seats yet to be installed on the left hand side of the photo (ie seats J, K). According to the seatmaps and my memories of the 747 configs, there aren't any with just 2 skybed rows on that side. Since the 16A seat is a little further back there is a few through the window on the left whereas there is a limited view from 16K, however of any on the UD I'd pick either these seats because of the extended legroom. Since the vast majority of my travel is transPacific, with the exception of 2 minutes at either end of a 14 hour flight there's really nothing to look at outside the aircraft anyway - so I don't get hung up about whether there is a view or not.

I seem to recall a version, where the crew jump seats were on the starboard side, at the exit? On this layout, IIRC, the stagger happened the other way, indicative of the extra space - as seen in the previous picture link.

Thanks

So I should be able to get 23A/K if I am quick with online check or are they assigned at the airport?

Cheers

This is baby zone (bassinet positions). Tread with caution. These seats are unlikely to be available in advance (unless you have a baby of course).
