You can transfer to anyone's airline account from MR.

Really? Last time my friend transferred points to someone else's account, he said he had to add them as his supplementary card holder first.

So AMEX MR can transfer to anyone's airline account?

That seems to be the official policy but you can sometimes make transfers to others. Give it a try.

You just go to the MR site and add the FF account, then transfer. There are limits as to the # of accounts so you may have to temporarily delete one in order to add a new one.

...official policy but you can sometimes make transfers to others.

To be clear, this refers to the USA version of Membership Rewards. Other countries' programs are implemented differently. If you link the other person's frequent flyer account to Membership Rewards online the system does not appear to check to see if that person is a cardholder. The transfer can also be performed online. No need to speak with anyone at American Express or the airline.
