I am a member of Amex in Australia, now living in Vietnam. I am travelling to the USA in late November and want to change points for drive days. Any suggestions for which company I should use? Can't seem to find a rate to convert points to car days.

Just check the Australian website of American Express. There is an offer for the following points which can be changed to an amount to be used at a car rental:

"Car Hire Vouchers
Car Hire Partner 6,750 points 13,500 points 32,500 points
Avis $50 $100 $250
Hertz $50 $100 $250

http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/personal/cards/rewards/travelvouchers.shtml#carhire

So you can just print that out, phone your local Amex Membership rewards office and check this.
Just ask them how they would process a reservation made in Australia for US locations and if they accept this voucher.
Other way would be to order one with the smallest amount, use it in Australia and try if the noticed AWD Discount Nr. would work in US also.

To the car rental companies:
According to my personal experience (mainly in Germany) Avis is a great car rental company regardless if you rent at a small station (where they know you) or an airport station.

Fast voucher processing:
I have ordered one voucher on Saturday last week and had it at home within four business days. Was a great service. The rules say that this could last up to 10 days.

Availability:
To reserve the car was no problem at all compared e.g. with some airlines which will try to never accept bookings with bonus miles when you would want to have them.

Sorry not to be able to give you the exact way of processing in your country due to my German residence.

But the process is the same (e.g. Avis):
1.) Order the voucher (amount or days of rental)
2.) Phone the car rental company quoting your voucher AWD Discount number
3.) They will say you the total amount of rental and the value deducted for the voucher.
4.) Drive and enjoy the points.

In my opinion the "exchange rate" of points to vouchers if really fine.:D

Hope this helps.

I like your logic on how to sort this out.

A small problem I have is I am living in Vietnam, and the mail goes to Australia. I wonder if there is anyway for Amex to send vouchers to the local office in HCMC..... will check in the morning.

I agree with you on Avis. It always seems to work for me...
