Hi Guys,

I'm about to take my Golf set abroad for the first time.. What is SQ's policy regarding this matter and regarding the extra costs related to this..

Has anyone ever had a problem with carrying Golf sets with SQ? How would their ground personnel take care of the oversized luggages?

The only thing I know from the web is this:

Special Charges for Bulky Items/Sporting Equipment
The following are considered bulky items and will be charges at different rates due to their size.

Golf Equipment

A standard charge of 6 kg will be applied on the golfing equipment if its weight together with the customer’s other checked baggage exceeds the free allowance entitled to the customer. This will apply up to a maximum excess of 15 kg for the golf bag, after which the normal excess baggage charges will apply. For example, a customer carrying 20 kg of golf equipment will be charged 11 kg - 6 kg standard charge plus the 5 kg after the first 15 kg.

This special charge is only applicable to one set of golf equipment per customer, and one set of golf equipment is deemed to comprise:
1 golf bag containing not more than 14 golf clubs
Maximum of 12 golf balls
1 pair of golf shoes
Golf tees
Any additional golf sets shall be charged according to the standard excess baggage charges.

For travel to/from the USA and/or Canada, each golf set will be considered as a piece of luggage under the piece system, and any excess baggage will be charged.

Carried clubs on SQ/Silk 3 times, no troubles at all. between 6-8kg each time, no questions asked.

Only had one problem, one time my bag got crushed. Just had to pop it out again though.

I don't get charged when my entire baggage is within the allowed amounts correct? or I get charged the 6kg fee first before the allowed amounts?

Well, whenever I have travelled my normal bag has been quite light, so they have probably taken that into consideration.

Just returned from a golf trip to Thailand on SQ in Y.
No problems with a full sized cart bag, 14 clubs, 2 dz balls, shoes and umbrella; all in the travel bag. Slightly over weight but nothing said and the bag was treated well. Out of SFO on SQ1, returned SQ2.

First time I have ever had an airline put “handle with care” stickers on the bag, nice touch.^

Yes, just confirmed.. As long as the "total" allowance is not overlimit, no charge at all...

Did you use a soft cover travel bag? or a hard shell one? I'd imagine the hard shell would be a lot heavier (re: weigh limitations), and the soft one is not as firm making the club heads more suspectible to damage?

I have never had any problems with using my soft cover bag. I use it on a regular basis flying within the UK but also on the odd long haul flight.

I’ve always used a soft cover, never had a problem. Always wrap a towel around and in between my irons so they do not do any damage to each other or other clubs.

I “upgraded” to a Bag Boy T7 last year. Padded top and wheels for about $80; highly recommend it.
