Hyatt Gold Passport - New to diamond level and still trying to work things out

We are going to Hawaii soon and have managed to get a suite upgrade at Maui. :)
But Waikiki is proving a problem.
I was using points for a Club room but could only get a Club mountain room
But then we became Diamond and thought it would be nice to have a suite.
Unfortunately, none are available!!!
So, do I book the cheapest room with the hope of getting a club upgrade or do I just pay for the room I want??
Is it likely we will get a better room because of the Diamond status?
Thanks for any advice!

I'd keep calling and speak to different representatives. I have had different reps on both the Gold Passport and Diamond Lines tell me no, while others 5 minutes later have confirmed it.
My understand is that the reps that place u on hold for 10 mins or so, and call the property are the ones who are trying their best. Alternatively, call the property direct as they are the ones who ultimately make the decision.
Although, I was under the impression award/points bookings couldn't have the suite upgrade applied.

Don't waste your points for a Club room. You WILL get upgraded to Club access since you are a Diamond. I have never heard of a Diamond being denied RC access at HR Waikiki in all my years on FT. If I were you I would burn FFNs here or if you have no FFNs then burn 15k per night, definitely don't pony up more points for something you will get anyway as a Diamond benefit. ^

As a Diamond always book the lowest category room and you'll be upgraded to a club room. Do the same when using a Diamond upgrade certificate on paid nights. For this reason I moved all my business from SPG to Hyatt, as the club upgrade is guaranteed and I found this to be of great value.

Hi frogss29, now you are getting the hang of it, this is where Hyatt outshines the others, book the cheapest, even months out on foward bookings and when you arrive ,Voila!!, a nice club floor, your own reception and booking service and a top shelf room. Now with your FFN's they will appear on your statement, if you want to use one, like your suite upgrades, you apply for a FFN night at the hotel of your choice. You will notice favourites, like the Paris Vendome, Park Hyatt Tokyo, Sydney Milan and Honkers, and who wouldn't want to stay there, these babies are worth 1K a night, not a bad freebie for two nights at a $100 pn Regency. Keep an eye on the expiry date of the suite upgrades, use every bonus promotion you can find, if you don't ask/tell them, you don't get the bonus!! Once you are into this program, work it, find out the best ways to achieve what YOU want, it's better than all the others, regards bkkrop

Agreed. It takes a while to get your head around G bonuses, but u can always apply these after you have made the initial reservation by calling the Diamond line.
Interestingly when I have tried to book a bonus offer through the website, the rate is much, much higher than a rate one would secure without that offer code.

Don't even bother calling before the stay - just ask the front desk person to add it at check-in/out - or if you forget or it doesn't post then call the CS.
